Brought home 2001 SR5 last night. Clean car-fax, clean auto-check, one owner Georgia car, 128,000 miles. Excellent sales experience from SR5 Auto Broker's in Chattanooga. Interior feels grungy, I guess, and there is a flaw in the 5th door but other than that the car is absolutely pristine. It took me about 5 minutes to remove each running board the undercarriage is so clean.

So being that I have no service records for the vehicle I just started with the basics:

• plugs (NGK's)
• wires (bosch gray)
• oil (wix filter)
• seafoam
• pcv

The middle coil pack had some discoloration and you can see the denso plug looks like it's munked up a bit. I don't have a clue.

Oil looked good, here's a look in the oil cap:

I feel like I need to do a timing belt/water pump but I don't want to spend the money on it yet and the belts looked good.

I seafoamed the PCV and got all the smoke out and pulled the running boards:

So I need to lube up the shafts and change the fuel filter but I just ran out of time today. After that I'll be adding an external transmission cooler.

Oh, yeah. Fixed all the lights that weren't working: front sidemarker light on passenger side and both license plate lights.

Congrats on the purchase, and good going getting all the basic maintenance out of the way so you won't have to worry about that. Maybe also register it at the Toyota Ownership site so you can see what service records they have on it.

They have none, nada, zip no records. It was the second thing I did besides the autocheck. Seller was kind enough to post the carfax on the website. That being said, there aren't really any nearby Toyota dealerships to where this one lived. I'm actually in the same boat, the nearest Toyota Dealership is about an hour away. I still do my 2011 at the Toyota dealership every time, but it is a PITA. Anyway, I did everything I could to make sure this thing was in good shape and the undercarriage cannot be faulted. Getting under the car and doing the initial maintenance gave me an even clearer view of the state of the truck. I'm happy. It's so quiet at idle I had to check the exhaust the first time I was near it.

You can buy a re-boot kit for the coils most parts stores can get them but have to order them in.

Very nice find! It is amazing that even a 4Runner at this age can still be that clean! Now the question is will you break it in or keep it for a DD? What is the plan?

It IS a DD. But one I won't need to rely on too terribly (I live less than 2 miles from where I work). Right now I've gotta get some more things on the truck taken care of, the VW Baja fixed and sold and then I can start to play a bit. Locker, lift and bigger tires are on the table, lights and new bumpers (f&r) to follow the sliders. But first Ball Joints and trans-cooler. I think the water-pump looks new so I'm gonna let it ride.

If I'm a dealer looking to get rid of a vehicle there's no way I would spend the money to do all the maintenance. If I'm a person thinking about getting rid of my old vehicle I'm probably not caring about it as much and letting that maintenance slide. I'm hoping the belts and waterpump have been done. I was told this was a non-interference motor so I'm not so concerned about the timing belt as I probably should be.

Greased up some zerks on the drive shafts tonight and swapped out the fuel filter. Holy Moly did that make a difference! I wanted to think that it was the ECU pull and re-put but I did that this past weekend, too. Seriously. Good stuff.

This one didn't come with a key-fob. Is the 2001 SR5 keyfob standard? How much are these things? Is that the RS3200 thing I keep hearing about?

Nice Runner, I have the same, 02 Millenium Silver Sr5 now 109k. I just put 265/75/16 Duratracs on it and now itching to get a lift. I'm just over in Coweta County. Anxious to see mods

I think I forgot to mention I did the seafoam thing into the PVC vacuum port (1/3 can) the other day, put the remainder in the crank-case. Today, at lunch, I went by the Autozone and picked up some Seafoam for my next tank of gas, some CRC MAF cleaner, and some CRC Throttlebody cleaner. Then...

Drove home, removed the airbox, pulled the MAF sensor:

cleaned that crap off...

Yanked the plumbing out from in front of the throttle body, used an electric grout brush and some towels and cleaned that up, threw it all back together and drove back to work.
