txbonds 15 4Runner Trail Edition thread

Kind of ran into a dilemma with my lift from Radflo not quite ready to ship until maybe next week and Camburg ball joint arms not ready for a month plus. The dilemma is that in order to get my trade vallue on the Nittos I had to trade them now due to time and miles.

Without the lift and without getting aligned I decided not to put the new cooper st maxx 255/80/17 tires on the truck yet and instead had them mounted on the black FN wheels with the TPMS sensors.

the issue is that I had to give them the Nitto tires off the truck. So I went and found 4 cheapie used 265/70/17 tires of various brands, treads and conditions to try to get me by for a few weeks. I had trouble finding any used but finally found them at one of those sketchy looking places with piles of used tires, cash only policy and no paperwork or receipt. Great I thought, but they were cheap.

So I get over to discount tire and they go to work mounting these on the black/silver wheels I'm replacing without the TPMS sensors since they moved those to the new wheels. Unfortunately it turned out 2 of the tires were unusable due to separation and a small cut sidewall that leaked. At this point I'm feeling screwed since there is no way the sketchy place is giving me money back.

Discount Tire went to bat for me though and we hatched a plan to mitigate my situation. I had to pull the factory spare tire and use it and they sold me an off brand new tire for not much more than I had paid for one of the used ones, but probably $60 less than their normal price.

Not feeling too bad at this point as I'm able to salvage 2 cheap used tires, the spare and only pick up one new tire. The saving grace came in the form of the spare they sold me. After digging around a bit they came up with a brand new BF Goodrich MT tire in 255/75/17 which had ended up unused and returned from a prior special order. They let me have it as a used tire basically and sold it for $30. You heard that right, $30 and it is close enough to the coopers in size to make a perfect spare once I get them on. (255/80/17 with a 255/75/17 spare). That win helped make up for an otherwise crappy day.

And what I'm telling myself is the salvation of the day and a score for new at $30. The new spare

That spare is a Jeep JK Rubicon take off, it has a special tread pattern. Yes that was a great find.

Your radflo's will ship beginning of next week. That is for sure.

Thanks. I got your email on it. These tires buy me time to collect up everything and allow me to do everything at once and then get it aligned before mounting the new tires. I just cringe at the thought of screwing up a $1000+ set of new coopers by mounting them too soon.

The BFG tire had a new tire label on the tread so if it came off a rubicon it must have been a spare tire or something as I doubt ones on the ground would still have the retail label on them.

It's less than an inch shorter but should be great for a spare hidden down bottom. :)

Radflo is now shooting to ship tomorrow, Friday. I think they will.

You can buy the Rubicon BFG Mud as a replacement as well. That is what it was. It is the only BFG MUD with that pattern, and only comes in one size.

Good find JK Rubicon take offs are a good tire for these trucks.

Cool. Certainly can't beat it for $30.

Thanks for helping me work out getting the Camburg arms quicker too as it looks like I may now get them around the same time as the radflo parts. :)

TX,

After your previous build, I am looking forward to this thread.

My 2011 Trail is at 58K and stock except for new BFG's. May pick your brain in 2015 on the topic of suspension and other subject matter. I do not want to go as far as our Rovers of the past, but still want to have some fun.

Cheers.

Look forward to seeing everything mounted up! A friend bought a set of Rubicon take-offs for his FJ on craigslist. Rubicon guy went up in size and the stock KMs only had around 4000 miles on them. 4 nearly new tires for $400. Hard to beat that!

Yeah man. We had some fun back then. You took your LR way further than me though. Wished I'd have been able to make the trip out west with you back then.

I was thinking about you the other day. Heard the craziest racket outside and when I got out to look there were around 8 to 10 Ospreys going over heading East. Pretty cool sight.

Give me a shout when it is time but I'll tell you that Steve at Sonoran has been the biggest help to me on all 3 runners. He would be good to talk to as well when you get ready.

Thanks. Sounds like a good deal to me given the price of tires these days.

Thanks. I'm probably gonna try again at selling the 3rd gen but want to finish getting the interior and stereo installed in it. At that point I'm going to look at possibly removing a few items like the winch to use with the new one and maybe partial skids and roof rack to sell. That way I can get the price I want down a good bit and still offer a ready to go truck for sell.

Let me know if you decide to sell the skids. I might take them off your hands.

Wow great third gen! Man you put some serious work into it, I almost can't believe your selling it so soon after "finishing" it. I am actually missing mine quite a bit, I have some regrets trading it, I should have kept it.

Good luck with your new ride can't wait to see what you do with it :)

Thanks. I had a lot of second thoughts over the last few days. I don't need or have to sell it but it's the practical thing to do as I just don't have time or space for both when it comes down to it. If I hadnt ended up with a brand new one though I would probably hang onto it.

That 3rd gen was a nice project to keep my focus away from losing my Mom to cancer. Time has passed and I had a good time bringing it back to some of its original glory but it's time to let it go and move on.

You will have the Camburg UCA's tomorrow.

Thank Steve. No rush. You are doing a great job for me with regards to getting me the parts I wanted that fit my need.

I'm putting 2 more new tires on the runner with the plans to just be able to drive on stock tires until all parts are in and the bigger item being having time to install. (If my crystal ball had been working I would have been better off to just keep the stock tires and wheels on it rather than trading the set of the 06. Oh well)

On a separate note the 97 went bye bye today.

I am sorry to hear that. My condolences.

I went through most of your build thread, you can tell you put a lot of care into what you did. Someone will be very lucky to pick that up.

On with the new :)

Thanks. I appreciate it. It wasn't unexpected but it hit me really hard as I've always been really close with my parents.

On another note, I pinned down a bumper. I was so set on going with a shrockworks style front making the new one look like the 97, but at the last minute I decided to stay more low key and ordered one of the SSS bumpers with hoop, winch mount and powder coating but without the lights. Not sure what sort of rear bumper pairs well with the SSS front as originally I was thinking a CBI rear with Shrockworks front.

Updated first post with running mod list.

Hey man, your build is going to be fantastic once all put together, definitely sub'd to watch her come together. I'm super stoked that you are doing black katzkin with red stitching. This is my next mod for sure but have been hesitant since I couldn't find any pictures of the combo in a 5th gen. Please post many pics once installed so we can see how close katzkin matches with the existing door cards. Keep up the good work!
