I know this is crazy but I have the urge to paint this thing a flat desert tan type color with black accents. Any idea how hard it would be to get a reasonable looking finish on this? Not looking for a show paint job as this will always be a weekend and trail truck. Any thoughts?
 
There is a local guy here that just had his entire 1st gen bedlinered in an awesome sand/tan color and he is doing a black top, flares and wheels. It looks badass. Ill try and get you a picture so you can visualize your 3rd gen.

Also, whats the part number on your ARB tree strap?

It wouldn't be too hard honestly. But like Brian said 2-2.5k for a exterior only pain job. Sometimes you can find guys that do it on the side and have a pair booth in their garage that do it cheaper. Painting sucks cause you can straight f*ck it up quick style.

Hmmm yep that would look pretty sweet. I don't think I would go blacktop though. Heat absorption am all

Yeah I was sort of thinking about the backyard special paint job. Almost like the good old boy camo job but with only the desert sand color. Then I would paint fender flares, grille, badging and tag trim in flat or semi flat black. Then the hood in flat back. (Think camel trophy look)

I was thinking about trying either regular krylon ultra flat khaki rattle can or maybe even something like this with a sprayer. HRF 233 - Desert Tan

Remember, offroad usage and easy scratch touch up is more important than show stopping paint job.
 
Local Line X dealer gave me a $3,000 quote for exterior color spraying. Then said they wouldn't do it due to liability as they only spray beds and boats.

Either way I would not spend that kind of money on it and am thinking doing it myself looks like a better and better option.
 
Just dropped 4 wheels off to get 285/75-16 Goodyear MTRs installed tomorrow. Also taking the truck to a local painter I found tomorrow morning for a basic exterior flat desert tan urethane single coat paint job. Will post update pictures soon.
 
Pulled the roof rack and cabin vent off to help paint prep a little but not much more I can really do. They will sand and mask everything else.

Dropping it off in just a minute with a stack of pictures showing flat desert tan to coyote colored vehicles for reference. Will hopefully get it back on Friday.

Also happy to say it fired right up this morning after sitting idle and uncranked in the garage for weeks.

$3000 for a line-x job, thats crazy stupid! I've seen good results from people who have rolled it on. Anyway - in for pics of the new paint job!

Paint Color?


I spoke to the shop and they are spraying my truck tomorrow. I'm going down in the morning to preview the color first. They mixed up a sample of Desert Tan using military paint codes as a guide but I also asked them to mix a sample of Toyota T-303 Fashion Green (1970 FJ40 Paint)


Anyone have an opinion which might look best given the direction of my build? I'm somewhat torn as I think both could look pretty cool. The other option is Toyota Dune Beige 416.

I think so too......


But I think I'm leaning towards the Dune Beige 416 color because that's the one my wife and son like. Will have a better idea when I see them I person tomorrow I guess.

No red for me. I've owned a few red vehicles but just grew away from them. I like silver or beige most the time these days.

You have the blackest of jet black trucks anyway, so Im surprised your first and second responses are not to paint it black. LOL. :)



I think any of the three they have tested will be cool.
