Tye's '87 Runner Build and repair thread

Well ok, but do I have to regear when I install teh other tcase? or will the additional tcase automatically lower hte gearing down enough?

What? No. Your transfer case high range is 1 to 1, so when you're in 2hi or 4hi you don't notice the lower range gears. It's only when you go to 2-low that the 4.7s kick in, and you're crawling at high RPM and very low speed.

Same with dual cases - when your crawlbox is in high range and the transfer case is in 4hi, it's just like stock. When you send the crawlbox to low range, you get 2wd at the lower range, very useful for steep or long descents on pavement. When you send the transfer case to low range, it's just like stock 4low. When you send both[/ui] to low range, it's extra-super-low range, useful for crawling over rocks at high RPM and very low speed.

Then of course you can stick 4.7 gears in one or both of your dual cases, and that starts getting seriously sick, seriously fast. Go to Marlincrawler.com, check out the video of his truck (a manual, I might add) idling up a 45 rock face while he's not even in the truck. Sick, I tell you.

Ok well if I can sell all my car audio stuff I'll have more than enough for all that stuff from the guy in that ad on cl. My stereo is worth over $1200 just in the substage so hopefully I can get close to that. That would get me the 4.70 gears tcase and marlin adapter.

Anyone know what years the 63" Chevy leafs are in? I know a ton of people use them but I need to know what years of chevy's they were used in.

Actually his is a 3/4 ton but it should have the same springs just with an added leaf or two that we can remove right?

awesome site by the way Nate tons of cool stuff there

Assuming they're the same length as the 1/2ton, which seems reasonable, there's probably more springs in the pack. You might have to pull some springs out to get the flex and height you want.

That would be my concern as well, Tye--will those truck springs give enough to allow your much-lighter 4Runner to compress them? You don't want to get out on the trail or road and find the back end just bounces a lot, using the tire sidewall as your springs because the real springs are too stiff. Just a thought.

Yeah we were planning on pulling a couple leafs out anyway

on a side note I am getting some 4.88 gears for the rear an possibly geting some more parts for the front. If anyone has a carrier and spiders for the ifs diff I am looking for an extra

check the width of those springs, i think 3/4 ton 63's are 3" wide and would flex very little. The most desireable ones are the 1/2 ton 2wd 63's. They are 3 leaf instead of 4 and are much softer.

OK I will measure them tonite, I should be back over at his house to rebuild his axle so I can measure then.

we measyred and they are 2.5" so they should work, they are off and old work truck so I am hoping they were well used and have some flex in them. They are 4with an overload leaf. Whet we are planning id to pull the ol spring and one more then test the ride and flex.

In other news, the lockrite rear locker goes in tomorrow plus another little custom job I have been workin on that will just have to be a suprise. There will be pics have no fear

nope they are goin in the doors, I was really surprised how much you can fit up there and still have room for your legs. I really want to finish it but this weekend has been so busy I haven't had the time

I started tinkering with my stereo recently, too, for about the same reason--I can't get the other stuff I need right now, but I already have the stereo stuff lying around. I'm trying to think up a new design for the amp locations, with boards that go in front of the rear side windows (you can't see out of them when driving anyway) to keep them out of the storage area in the middle. I could tie them into my storage box for support. Then maybe build a simple rack for hanging my shovel and any longer items down the side as well (my shovel is a 3/4 length model, so it wouldn't interfere with the doors). I may have you check out my front door speakers and see if you can blend them in better, as they stick out pretty far with the spacers I need. I'm anxious to see yours when you get it all in!
