Tyler James Inc's OEM+ '97 Limited

Any rubbing with your tires?
I've trimmed a bunch up front, as well as flattened the firewall pinch, but I haven't relocated the washer reservoir, so I rub on that when turning driver. I run 5" BS wheels to minimize scrub radius, so rub on the frame at lock both directions, but that doesn't bother me.
I rub on the rear bumper/mud flap when stuffed as well.

What is your clearance on the UCA with that set up?

And...you need to get back over to Bend.

I do! So badly! [emoji30]
Clearance is zero. Well, maybe 1/4" at ride height, but droop causes contact. I could shave the UCA and eliminate rubbing. If/when I get aftermarket UCA's, it won't be an issue at all. If it was an 8" wheel(with 315's), it wouldn't be okay, but the 9" wheel makes the sidewall less-bulgy, and my rub isn't bad at all. It barely kisses the sidewall enough to make a rub ring. IMO it's perfect, because it puts the wheel/tire as close to the pivot point as possible.
As you can see, [MENTION=125440]FrontRangeOffRoad[/MENTION] Brian agrees [emoji12]

Those are probably 5.5" BS wheels with 37's.
Edit-
Specs say the wheels are 4.5" BS. I guess that makes sense, because the 37's are 1.5" wider.

Didn't get many pictures from this past weekend's trail run, but it sure was fun! We had a huge turn out; 16 rigs showed up [emoji43] It was a "beginner" run, that was supposed to be kept to the moderate trails.

After seeing all the damage that took place up there and Ladee on Saturday I opted not to go. Plus - 16 rigs...seriously. Not my cup of tea. Cedartree and Powerlines are doable runs for most stock rigs but throw in the amount of rain we've had and the trails take on a mind of their own. It's a mess up there right now. Picked up a Warn Snatch Block in the raffle we had on Saturday. Great weekend for me.

Oh nice [MENTION=116467]Rock_Rat[/MENTION]
It really wasn't bad, but when you get a crew of newbs on the trails with tires across the spectrum, as well as zero off-road driving experience or lessons- it can get messy fast!
I have minimal off-road driving experience, and it was still a breeze. I was 3rd in line though, so that made it nice too.
Going back up the 25th with a smaller group. Should be another great time!

I just read through your whole build. Awesome work on the rig bro! Youve just convinced me to put 315s on mine haha. Im running 275/70/17s with no BL but it looks so small on my rig; i measured it and it was only 31" from the ground up to the top of the tire.

Right on! Thanks man [emoji5]
What tires are you looking at getting? If KO2, you might consider the 35x12.5 over the 315. The 315 is a little wider and shorter. I wish I would have gone with the 35x12.5, as I think it would fit just a hair better!
Let me know if there's anything I can do to help out.

2WD swap goin down today! [emoji12]

Also chopping my UCA while I'm at it. They barely rubbed at droop, but no rub is even better, and I like fab work-

Whoa. I didnt realize how close your uca's were to the tire. I also read the whole official 35s thread to get an idea of what i can do without using a BL. I was planning on getting 315/70/17 kos since i got a hookup for $600 total! These are c rated tires tho compared to my 275s which are E rated.

Sweet manual hub setup? R u gunna ditch the abs system?

Why did you put in 2wd spindles? Did you leave your diff and plug the axle tubes?

Yeah, I've had the manual hubs for a little while, but I threw them on without going through anything, and that was a mistake. I need to blast the hub dials and repaint them, replace a couple hub body studs, and get new cone washers, nuts, and dial bolts- I want it to be like new. I also need new wheel bearings.
Oh awesome! C rated tires will be really nice, and damn that's a score of a price!
Backspace is super important with bigger tires. Mine are only 33.5" tall, so I don't have firewall rubbing issues- especially with my 5" BS wheels. I still need to do a full bump lock to lock clearance "test".

Haha because prerunner! [emoji12]
Not really.
I'm tired of my ABS light being on from the non-abs Tacoma manual hub knuckles, I don't want to just pull the bulb, the bearings on the manual wheel hubs are shot, and my buddy had these sitting around. He's doing a solid axle on a '98 that was 2WD, so I figured I'd throw them on while I swap the manual wheel hubs onto my ABS knuckles. That way I won't be rushed on a weekend to get everything pressed together, and I won't have my rig down. I'll probably gusset the knuckles while I'm at it, and UCA's would be sweet. We'll see. My budget is super slim.
My ADD CVs were completely shot(see also: separated boots; joints pull apart easily), so I just left the stubs in the diff to "plug" them.
I'd like to do a complete ABS delete with new OEM hardlines for a non-ABS rig, but not sure what's involved to completely get rid of it without any codes. I've tried searching, but have only heard of one guy doing it, and not sure who it was. Maybe [MENTION=59542]Singtoe[/MENTION] ?
I thought the road noise I've been hearing was the Whiteline bushings, but it was the manual wheel hub's bearings that were completely shot. These 2WD knuckles are so amazing- no ADD axle noise, and smooth as silk bearings! It'll be awesome to have the manual stuff all refreshed and new bearings. 4WD is kinda cool [emoji23]

Glad I stumbled across your build. Very impressive. Subscribed!

BTW I am curious if you will ever switch back to OEM wheels. I had similar aftermarket and switched back after realizing once scratched up the aftermarket are much harder to paint.

Also when you decide one day to paint all the fender flares to match your primary paint it will look insane. That hatch looks great.

Lastly I cannot emphasize enough how strongly I recommend you strengthen you spindles with a weld on aftermarket brace. At over 250k miles the risk of failure due to metal stress is very real. I'm not alone of those who've broken down due to spindle failure. You seem like a very hands on guy so it wouldn't set you back too much cash.

Something like this: https://www.yotamasters.com/shop/su...-04/total-chaos-96-04-tacoma-spindle-gussets/

it will be interesting to see if you see a difference in MPG without all that front end turning but all other things being equal.

I know! I'm interested in the same thing.
Thing is, my Milne is all over the place as it is. Same stataion, same commute- sometimes I barely get 14mpg; sometimes I get nearly 16.5mpg! I don't get it at all.

Thanks man! I appreciate it.
While I'm with you on the wheel finish not holding up too great, I'm not sure if there is an OEM wheel I would be happy with. Not just from a design standpoint, but I'm not sure if I could go only 7.5" wide. I think the Trail wheels are the only OEM I could run, and I'm not sure how they would look on my color. Maybe if I had them powder coated or something. If I were to do that, I'd be better off powder coating these though.

Wait, what?! Did I say something about painting my Dark Gray cladding Anthracite?! I'm not sure I've ever even considered that. I think I like the two tone. I think I would like it all Anthracite too, but if I were to go that deep into a respray, I would DEFINITELY be ditching my Limited doors for base model, and using big '00 SR5 or '01/02 Sport flares! That's definitely my favorite combo. That combo in my color would be dreamy. ❤️

I didn't realize the mileage had an affect on the failure likelihood of the spindles, but I was planning on bracing them with the TC gussets anyway. $35/set is more than reasonable for those.

Nice clean truck man.... I thought I was the only one here who wanted an OEM+ 4Runner!

Keep it up man!

Thanks man! Yeah, I'm not into the "as many mods as possible" thing. More like as stock as possible [emoji23]

Speaking of stock-

That picture was taken an hour ago, just FYI.

This is the end of the road for my '97 Limited. Thanks for all the kind words, and for following along.
