U.S. Bill "Cash for Clunkers" - 4Runner included!

So I saw this interesting article on MSN ...

"Under a 'cash for clunkers' bill in the United States, car owners might earn windfalls by trading in their gas guzzlers for vehicles with better mileage. The article lists the 1999 Toyota 4Runner as a vehicle that would qualify."

"The article goes on to say that nearly all 4Runner models get 18 mpg or less. The 1999 version will also give owners a hefty trade-in bonus if the clunkers bill passes. Its book value is just $3,000."

While many of us are concerned about the escalating cost of fuel and how much it costs us to drive our T4Rs, I plan on keeping my 03 T4R for a long, long time and will keep it in good condition with routine maintenance. I bought it knowing they kind of mileage it would get, so no surprise there.

When I think "clunker" I have a very different image in mind than what I drive now. There are a lot of unsafe and unfit vehicles on the roads.

How many of you are going to give up your T4R for a Prius???

I saw the same thing. I don't consider my '98 a clunker and I'm not sure anyone else would either.
A "clunker" owner probably can't afford a new car even with the damn discount.

I'm just putting it out there. I suspect most T4R owners are quite happy with their vehicles. I don't anticipate a rush on Prius sales from former T4R owners

and think of all the good used parts that are going to go to waste because of this bill

I wouldn't trade in my 1990 4runner for this BS. Has >200K but ain't no clunker. Bought it new. If I had wanted to buy a vehicle that would turn into a clunker I would have bought a Ford Explorer. Even if I was to trade it for another vehicle it would be another 2nd gen or 3rd gen 4runner. I wouldn't even want a new 4runner since they all have goddamn auto trans.

As far as a Prius, where am I going to put my dogs and all the crap I haul? Not to mention they're not exactly off-road worthy. Besides, they're so goddamn ugly.

This is just another brilliant idea from our government to waste taxpayer money.

A toyota prius is less environmetally friendly than a land rover discovery. and they all a think there doing something good for the environment!

That really annoys me. How dare they call 3rd gen 4runners "clunkers". There are so many other cars in my area that deserve to be classified as clunkers. A lot of them aren't roadworthy and probably get crappy gas mileage too. They could offer me the original price my parents paid when it was new to turn it in, but I still would not get rid of it! :flipoff:
