UCA Advice

So I am at a bit of a crossroad with my 06 Limited. I did Bilstein 5100's all the way around with Icon 2" springs in the rear, and the fronts adjusted to their maximum height setting. Its time for tires and I want to go up another .5" in the front to level "Big Booty Judy" out a bit more. My understanding is that I will need to do UCA's to get the caster back in spec, but I can't decide which route to go. With the $1100 in tires I plan to spend, $200 in spacers, and another $170 for front springs, the $680 bucks for Total Chaos sounds painful. I have been told that they are the best option, and I want to make sure its all done right. Do you gents recommend going that route, or is there an alternative I am missing?

Yup it is what you need to do, you can go with Total Chaos,DirtyDeeds,Camburg,
Kings, etc if you want your alignment right on spec.
Oh wait Pro Comp just came out with UCA's with good reviews and price

I would also keep in mind the price of replacement uniballs for whichever UCA you go with. If I remember correctly, the Total Chaos replacements were expensive, although full stainless steel.

I like the camburg units as they retain bjs instead of uniballs. I just prefer the lower maintenace of them.

That sounds interesting! Any idea where you saw that info on the ProComp units? They aren't listed on their website that I could find.

Yeah Right here

During the holidays they were going for 430 bucks after all the discounts even Totalautomotive one of the sponsers here had them for like 450 hit them up
There really cool and are actually the ones who recommended them as a choice as I never even heard about them, he said.. they just came out.

Icon

Lets' not over look Icon tubular. It would be really hard to go wrong with any of the options listed in above posts. Camburgs and TChaos were my two runners up to my Icon Choice. It makes a world of a difference when your caster rolls back into spec.

I can tell you that at 1.75 - 2.0" of lift on my 2wd V6, I am already quite a bit out of spec for caster. Still seems to drive ok but am considering replacing UCA with the SPC/Light Racing.

Seems like everyone is a little different. Most say that at 2.5-3" of lift you will be out of spec. Unfortunately, that was not the case for me.

if you don't need the travel then go with the camburg uca with moog ball joints. if you don't want upkeep on some uniball's.

I am thinking I may go for the ProComp units. If I can still get them for the sale price I am seeing, they are almost $200 cheaper than the Icons I was considering, and they look good on paper. Anyone else run these before or currently?

My Bilsteins are set to the second highest setting. My camber and toe are spot on. I check my toe often, as I have knocked the toe out the truck a few times. As far as Caster, what are some of the negative attributes am I looking for with my lift? My truck appears to drive on and off road just fine. In fact at one point, I had my front 5100's set to max while using the Toytec/Eibach 2" coil. Aside from needing to reset the toe, everything else felt fine and the truck still drove fine. I dont feel any difference in steering wheel feel. Lastly, I dont know if the caster is out or whatever, but my rig self centers if you let your hands off the wheel coming out of a corner. So, can anyone tell me the pros and cons of improper caster? Thanks

If your vehicle self centers, and drives straight, you are probably good to go. I can't explain how that is possible with the setup you describe, as every other person I have talked to with that amount of lift has a caster alignment issues. For me the vehicle doesn't self center, and it wanders pretty horribly. Going up another half an inch for me will only exacerbate the situation from what I am told.

On a side note, it was my understanding that you should never go above the bottom setting on the 5100's with anything other than the stock springs. In fact the gents over at Toytec told me is would result in binding the CV joints and some other bad stuff. Are you running the Toytec/ Eibach 112-620 springs? Has it caused you any problems?

After refreshing myself as to the matter, I tested it and it comes about 75% back to center after a normal turn and even full lock. Ive always known my caster was out some, but it really hasn't bothered me too bad yet. I will get new arms when the time is right. I keep my toe set, and I check it from time to time. As far as the cv's, all I can say, is I just recently serviced them, and for 115k, the wear looks really great given the amount of off road use my rig is subject to. No bind, no noise, no clunking, nothin! I do use a heavy high temp red wheel bearing grease. Oh, and yes, Im using the 620lb Toytec front spring, and for my type of wheeling, the compression rate between the spring and 5100 is great. The rebound is a bit off though.

Lift and pull

When I put my Fox Suspension on it put me just outside of spec. When I would romp on the right pedal it could easily pull me into the other lane or shoulder. I had it aligned and zero point calibrated and now it's like driving a "car". World of a difference.
