So I started to hear a sound in the lower end :( uh oh... It happens when the vehicle has been driven awhile and warmed up then stopped for awhile. While the engine is still a tad warm and started back up I hear the sound some times. If it is idling you hear it but when revving a bit it seemingly goes away. No loss of performance to speak of and otherwise runs fine.

I took a recording of it an attaching it to the post here. You can hear the motor in the back ground and the noise in the foreground. You may listen a few times to sync those sounds in your head.

I am holding the phone on drivers side under the oil pan.

Any guesses?

No not sure of anything. Sunday it goes in first visit to a trusted tech. I planned on doing a valve job, valve gasket, timing chain look see, all new radiator hoses, fuel filter, brake inspection, exhaust manifold, and general overall inspection.

I gave him the go ahead to do timing chain, water pump, and oil pump as well. He says he can inspect chain and replace guides only if need be just with valve cover off :) - who knew :)

But I figured someone here has heard this before at some time..
 
With the valve cover off you can look down the front of the motor behind the timing cover and see the guides. That doesn't sound like timing chain trouble to me, but it certainly won't hurt to for him to take a look.

If your noise isn't valves and isn't the timing chain, you can ask him to pull the oil pan and check the main and rod bearings. Or you could do it yourself... ;)

Haha, if I laid on my back under the truck it would be a good excuse to take a nap for a few hours :) I am in the vehicle cheap enough I already planned replacing the motor ultimately when I bought it and even though I have changed many parts a full motor install or major internal engine stuff isn't anything I have done. I'll let the skilled do that...

Ok so the sound was from the transmission cooling lines ( metal ones) vibrating inside their mounting brackets. :) yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

I need to go back under the truck now that it has been discovered and tidy up everything. The noise was stopped by holding the lines as to the specific detail not sure yet. Ill see when I get off today from work.
 
And it is one for the record in the event other have same sound. The sound sounded like it came out of oil pan in lower end.

glad it was an easy fix.


im dreading dealing with my timing chain/guides. im positive they are toast... pretty sure they have been for many years, but it just keeps running.

The guy I brought it to replaced the drivers side guard without taking off the timing cover. He inspected the rest and gave it an ok..

He did?

Dude's got skills. I can't picture how you would get a wrench down in there to unbolt the old guide, let alone maneuver the new one into place and line the bolts up.

its been a lot of years since ive been inside a 22r, but that was my thought also. I think it would be pretty difficult to change it with the cover in place.

He said when I met him he could do it as he made a special tool for the job :)

Yup I was gunna have the timing chain changed along with sprockets and guides as I have no history on vehicle. He said he would take valve cover off and look at guide and inspect. He told me he can replace the guide long as all else looked good. Sure enough that's what he did. I saw the old guide and it was toast :)

I will get more details when I bring it in for some other details I want maintained. He prolly doesn't have time to post on a forum though...busy guy being honest and a money saver.
