Uhaul Trailer

I am moving from NJ to Miami. I wanted to bring my motorcycle down with me (06 Honda CBR). I have never used a trailer before. I think the 4runner should be able to handle it. I dont have a tow package which I believe has a transmission cooler but not expecting to haul more than 800lbs. I wanted to use a UHaul enclosed trailer to being down the bike and throw in some things as well.
I was looking at the 5x9 trailer quoted about $592, however the 4x8 trailer is $444. I was curious if anyone has experience with trailering a motorcycle in this smaller enclosed trailer. Is it enough space to safely haul the bike? Also any advice about hauling a trailer is appreciated.

I dont have an answer for you as I have never towed anything but I just wanted to add an alternative you may want to consider is using the Autotrain which leaves Lorton, VA to Sanford, FL. You can put your vehicle on the train and it saves you 900 miles on travel. Sanford is only a 4 hour trip from Miami, FL.

Of course you would have to do two trips for both vehicles or have a good friend drive down with you but it is just an option.

I haul two Harley's on a Kendon open trailer. Biggest thing is strapping it securely. Not on the side stand. Center is ok, else it should be on two straps at the fork. A rear strap is helpful. If you can nose it into the front wall, or buy/build a wheel chock for the front it's a lot easier/safer.

You don`t need enclosed trailer to haul CBR,you`ll need 3 things, cheap harbor freight trailer (about $150-200) wheel chock and "canyon dancer" strap. then watch youtube video how to strap properly, it`s very easy.

much cheaper than renting Uhaul, save on gas because u haul is heavy.
After you done you can keep trailer or sell it on craigslist for about the same as you bought it for. Use 20-25% HF coupon to safe more.

I moved my Hayabusa on one of those trailers for 5 years and 20000 miles or so. CBR is lighter.
 
I have towed my Bike with a uhaul trailer before actully that's how i got the 4runner rode and towed it back.

The thing with uhaul trailers is that are over built and that makes them heavy, the 4 runner will pull it. Just keep an eye on the trans temp, torque app and enter the codes for the trans sensor.

I would get a quote add in how much extra gas it cost because of the weight and compare it to out right buying a trailer from say harbor freight the biggest thing with that is upgrading the tires. You could also buy a trailer from a local manufacturer or used from craigslist.

Remember after you own the trailer track days are easier.
 
For $500+, you can very likely buy an open-top trailer and if you have the room to store it, they are SOOOOOO useful. Had access to one for a couple years and used it anytime I didn't want to get the inside of my SUV (had a Pathfinder then) dirty or had something that would be a pain to get inside. It's like having access to a truck bed anytime you need it.

Anyway, you'll be fine towing the trailer. Transmission temps shouldn't even be a problem since you're not going through the mountains. Good luck!
 
I did not realize a trailer was so cheap. We wanted an enclosed trailer so we can throw in some bicycles and awkward shaped items as well. I will go to harbor freight today to check them out but I dont think my wife will let me buy one because of not having space to store it, even if I do sell it. I will however probably buy one the next time I need it.

Has anyone used any other enclosed trailers, would a 4x8 work?

Any particular driving tips i should know about? 4wd, downshifting, etc?
 
Yes, I believe a 4x8 will work. make sure to strap everything inside. make sure that you are not putting too much tongue weight or at least position the items inside the trailer so it's not too heavy in the front. when it comes to driving, just drive according to the speed limit.

when driving on a hilly terrain like downhills, use as much engine braking as possible or by downshifting. same with going uphill, downshift if you think the engine can't handle it in higher gear. revving the engine is fine if you need to.

I think, you'll be okay with that trip.

I pulled a 5x8 Uhaul packed full of my son's furniture from Ann Arbor, MI to San Francisco using my son's 1996 Honda Odyssey with 200k plus miles on it. The key for me was to drive at a reasonable speed based on the conditions and use a lower gear as needed. The trip was over 2,600 miles and I had no problems. I changed the oil and tranny fluid before and after the trip and there were no signs of burnt ATF. I must say that I wish I had been able to use my 4Runner for that trip!

No Worries

I have hauled trailers on and off the past year with at least 3500 lbs in my 05 V-6 4x4. Although they did not have a motorcycle, the weight was substantial and other than a reduction in gas mileage (enclosed Uhaul trailers), I have not experienced any problems. Hope this helps
 
We tow dirt bikes with our 4Runners every weekend. One has towing package, one doesn't.
If it's a one day trip, you can buy a trailer from tractor supply for cheap. It's better than harbor freight. I would cable lock the bike still. If it's an overnight trip, go enclosed.

Just an update:

The drive was actually pretty easy. Reversing was the hardest part but no problem with the tow. I realized I could have put in more weight with a larger trailer and still be fine. Recoil on bumps was new thing however overall v6 was more than adequate for the entire drive.

However my motorcycle was stolen. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
