Ultimate Cupholders by fischer

I just ordered 2 of these
to saddlebag in front of my 4wd and gear shifter on my 96 limited.

To give a round about idea of what I mean, this is where the idea stemed. I'm going to use fiberglass unless someone else has a better idea to get this to conform to the irregular shape I'll be dealing with.

By the way I love the shotgun/rifle holder they have for the fjcruiser not shown in the above link but on springtail solutions home page. Here

I'm open to suggestions if anyone has any.

Very interested to see what you come up with. A couple of those Fischer cup holders would be worth their weight in gold for a 96-98 4Runner.

I'm running into a little bit of a problem with the fiberglass. I've never used it before so maybe I just need to experiment with the resin and hardener some more. How temperature sensitive is the resin? I mixed it, saturated the mesh I cut to fit, and left it over night. Looked at it this morning and it was still gooey and never set.

I saw a thread on here probably close to a month ago, someone used the round landrover cup holders- they looked pretty good also. If this doesnt work, that may be something to check out.

I remember the thread you're talking about and it does look pretty nice in a 4runner.

I saw that disco cup holder in the 80 series tech section of Ih8mud a few years ago but the price keeps me at bay plus these folding cuholders will hold as much if not more than the discos. I never tried to put a drink with a low handle like a coffee mug in these fischer cupholders but they held everything else from a can to a 32oz gatorade bottle. I was very impressed with the functionality and build quality when I had them in my 80. Hopefully I can get them to work without drilling any holes but if I must then that's what I'll do.

Resin can be very temperamental especially if you are using a cheaper brand like bondo or elmers. Don't get me wrong bondo will work and will harden up etc, but the difference between that an like US Chemical is night and day in consistency. The other thing to watch out for is the shrinkage... the cheaper stuff will expand and contract more with the changes in weather. Another option is make a plug out of glass, filler, MDF etc, and then vacuum form some ABS over it.

I did the Landrover cup holder thing. LOVE IT! Holds small coffee cups to huge big gulp cups. Not sure if it will work on manual and/or 4wd. Got mine off Ebay for $20. I've seen new ones for $70 ish for two. Maybe order two the re-list one on Ebay if you don't use it....

That looks really easy to use once I get it set up. Using the ABS might be the way to go instead of this cheap fiberglass (bondo brand) I have. Especially since you say the cheap stuff will contract/expand

That's the Disco one I was referring to. It does look pretty nice but I'm just not sure I can find a place to put it. These fischer ones are a little more universal and I've used them before so I know they will work for the kinds of things I drink. I never have a container with a handle on it so that feature on the Disco type isn't important to me. However if you have a 2wd the Disco may be the best solution if you can find it for around $20. Nice find!

I believe you're right but after what stick figure said I may just dump the fiberglass idea.

Oh you'll probably still be using the fiberglass even if you go the ABS route... making the plug for it could take some time. The good news is that the ABS should be pretty repeatable so you could do a few more for other people and make some money.

Any stores like lowes, home depot, or hobby lobby carry those ABS sheets?

I found some sheets at Pearl Art (I think they are all out of business now) but you could check your local hobby shops. They use those panels for train sets and other modeling stuff.

I've usually gotten them wholesale (audio supply or plastic company), but I'm sure you can find something available at the the hobby shops.
