Un-freakin-believable!

So I decided to wash my baby today since I haven't washed her for almost 2 months as we've been getting rain just about every other day for the past month or so. Today is a relatively cool day, about 65 degrees and partly cloudy. So I washed my baby and upon drying her, I saw what I couldn't believe at first. A freakin' crack on the lower mid-section of my windshield. It's an inverted "L" shape or a "7". There were no prior stress cracks or stars at all.

I called Longo Toyota since I did purchased an extended warranty (6yr/100k platinum) from them and they said that glass was excluded from the bumper-to-bumper warranty. I told them that the cracked windshield is not a wear & tear item and should be covered. The service guy transferred me to the parts dept to get a quote for the glass and it came out to be $577 OTD. Unbelievable!!! However, the parts guy was real nice and advised me to call back tomorrow morning and speak directly with one of the service managers as they may give me some slack and cover it. I guess I'll have to wait till tomorrow morning. Meanwhile, I'm trying to avoid driving her to prevent the crack from spreading. They also said that their body shop will need to do the repair, but they're only open Mon-Fri. Hell, I work in the OC and I can't get it done w/o a loaner car. Hopefully, everything will work out fine. I'll post some pics after I blow off some steam.


EDIT: Just so there's no confusion on what caused the crack, I'll reiterate my situation. THERE WAS NO CRACK IN THE WINDSHIELD BEFORE I WASHED MY 4R. AFTER I WASHED HER, THERE WAS A CRACK. The windshield wasn't very dirty and I washed it just like I normally do. I BELIEVE that the slight change in temperature of the glass and the water must've crack it. I noticed the crack during the drying cyle (I use Mr. Clean auto wash).

P.S. - Please no DUMBASS remarks! Keep that s*%^ to yourselves.

I'd say you'd be lucky if they cover it under warranty. But, that does suck.. happens though. I have a chip in my windshield, right in center view of the driver. Hasn't gotten worse, so I'm happy.

Just have your insurance pay for it. I am assuming you have full glass coverage. If not, add that to your policy, because it can happen again.

Are you completely insane? Why would a windshield be covered? That's absurd. You probably jumped a curb and put stress on the windshield making it crack.

I've dumped a bucket of hot water on my windshield on a 30 degree day (gotta love hand washing in the winter) without cracking my windshield.

I'd guess that there was more to it than just a temperature difference.

Must be something else like a football landing on it. I've seen staff cars at school get cracks in the glass from soccer balls, baseballs etc landing on the screen.

I would hope your insurance would cover it with no loss of no claim bonus.

Most insurance policies will cover up to a few windshield replacements with no out of pocket. I say this because I highly doubt Toyota would replace it (99.99% confident). It sucks but you're better off calling your insurance company and telling them to cover for a replacement.

Just to let you know that claming this and having your insurance pay for the windshield is called an "incident" and too many "incidents" even ones caused by accidents that are not even your fault can raise your insurance premiums.

My sister's 89 accord had the rear window just shatter one day while she was driving. The dealership replaced the window because apparently when it was installed during assembly it wasn't put in just right and kinda had a bind in it. Driving/flexing it caused it to shatter (she was braking when it shattered). The car was only about 3 weeks old and it exploded OUTWARD in a way that made it obvious that something from the outside of the car didn't break it.

We had a Mazda MX-3 and one winter we drove for OK to MI to VA. The morning we left MI it was -29 degrees F, 18hrs later it was 80 degrees F and we had a cracked window. When we got back to OK we called the dealer, told them what had happened and the covered it. It is a possiblity that they will cover it. Good luck with that.

You could of had a small crack, and the water made it bigger. Just call your insurance company, and call it a day. I can tell you, unless you get the person in a really, really good mood, it is not covered. I went through 4 windshields in my company car last year.

This is absolutely correct. Many repair shops will even eat your deductable for your business so you can get it done for free. I did this on my Bimmer.

Thanx for the input guys. I guess I'll find out tomorrow morning if it will be covered or not. BTW, the parts guy said that they will also need to replace the UPPER MOULDING trim piece and its about $27. For those of you who have replaced your windshield, does the upper moulding need to be replaced or can the original one be reused? Thx n adv. I'll keep you guys posted.

no need to buy new moldings, just replace glass. I did mine several years back and it was easy. Guy came out and did it while I was at work and it was done in about 30 minutes.
