Is this is your or a truck planning to buy?

If it is yours, not so bad and start working on it ASAP. If you plan to buy it, depends on the $$$.

Yeah it was a car I was thinking of buying... Its in Chicago and Im in the Metro Detroit area. It looks too rusty for me. Im gonna just look below the rust belt.

That just looks like surface rust. All the 4Runners up here in Canada look like that if not worse.

Honestly, it doesn't look that bad. A lot of surface rust but it looks to be just that. No major scaling or rust deterioration not even on any of the bolts like the body mount bolts. You can still see nice threads. I'd like to see the rear dif housing center shot. The other classic place for rust next to the muffler is starting to show some rust through the holes but looks to be solid. You would definitely have to attack the rust, but doing a section at a time with some good rust coating like POR15 or KBS Coatings and coat the internal frame you'll be on top of it in no time.

That's not that bad. You need frame pics. From what I can tell, the frame by the control arm mounts still look great. Steering rack may have a leak though. Check your pic up front and one of the bellows is wet on the bottom.

Looks pretty decent honestly, some elbow grease, time with a wire wheel on a grinder and undercoat could clean it up well.

Doesn't look bad. But if you want to keep it around then you'll need to sand all the rusty areas and properly paint it. I wouldn't worry about control arms or tie rods and stuff. Those will eventually get replaced anyways. Most important is body mounts, frame. If your buying this check rocker panels near front wheel and rear quarter panels inside the wheel

@Crave4runner, remember you posting a few days ago - this one is pretty avg for Chicago if not better. I'd check the rear diff, pumpkin, and frame by the muffler. Just redid the factory undercoating on mine and she looks showroom underneath. Agree with the posts above, all about pricing. Seems like a lot of people in Chicago don't know what they have and you can score a good deal, esp @ the shifty used car lots.

For they price he is asking you can get one down south in great condition with no rust. I looked online everywhere from West Texas, OK, Kent, Tn, Georgia, all the way down to Florida. Wanted to make sure I got one that I didn't have to worry about that at all. I spend less than what he's asking with 30k more miles and have an 01 in great shape that has lived it's whole life in Texas. It looks really nice except for that rust. But, in my opinion if I'm paying top dollar, it better be in tip top condition. You can spend less and not have to worry about rust.

Good luck! Tough call in my opinion....depends on the cost at the end of it all.

It really is not that bad, as long as you treat it right away. It looks better than 95% of trucks of the same year up here. Mostly surface rust, and your rear differential and its hardware looks very solid under that rust.

I would definitely buy it and anti-rust treat it right away. I don't know what expectations you had, but these trucks are getting somewhat old, and are prone to rust, so if you think that is bad, you really never been under most trucks of these years here, they are falling appart, way worse than this.

I agree with what the others have said here. It looks like a lot of surface rust, but very little rust that is going deeper. The rust I have on mine looks a little less widespread, but actually my rust problem is deeper rust. It's not perfect but it is definitely solid and treatable.

Looks worse than it is. Treating it, you will get a sinking feeling when some of the scale drops off. Like others are saying it can be managed. I'm working mine as able, and it is cleaning up pretty good. Seriously planning to spray it down with something and let it drip for a few days on the asphalt road when I am done.

Awesome responses fellas... But I think Im gonna keep on searching for a clean none rusty 4runner. I just dont want to deal with the rust and cleaning it all off. Just going to search down south and get a ppi done or have someone check it out for me, then just ship it.

If he came down in price to like 5-6k, I would be interested but I know he wont go below 7500.

I would say that rust is minor for being in the rust belt. Like many have already said, a little grinding and some good frame paint and you'd be good to go.

if the price isn't right than keep looking.

Way I look at it is that I could spend 1k extra and get a rust free 2003-2005 4runner with a v8 from the south. I talked to the owner last night on the 01 and he wont go below the 7500. No biggie... just keep looking.

$7500?? Won't budge???!!!! WTF Not sure if it's a Limited, SR5, options etc but that's still a bit too much money for something that's 15 years old with slightly below average miles. The tires don't even look that great and there's some sort of leak going on. Walk away from that ass clown.
