Undercoating on your T4R

I wanted to know if anyone has done an undercoating on their T4R. I take my truck on the beach from May until November and I was wondering if I should get the truck undercoated? If so what is the best stuff to use? What are the benefits? Are there any benefits?

Although i don't have my TR4 yet, i always undercoated all of my vehicles. They make a special coating that you can spray underneath the car (remove the exhaust and other stuff first). The benefits are keeping rust off the bottom of your car! Also makes it fairly easy to take a hose to the bottom of the car and wash all the crap off.

Some people used specific undercoating applications, while I've heard and seen others use truck bed liner underneath. I plan on painting the axles, frame and suspension bits with POR-15.

The benefits would be less rust and if you're painting the floor boards, maybe a slightly quieter interior. The downside is if someone else is going to apply the undercoating and they plug the drain holes, it'll create rust faster.

my truck's undercarriage was rusty as hell because of all the salt on the roads up here in Canada. Plus its an 8 year old truck. I sanded off all the rust from the undercarriage, hitch etc. without removing any parts (took forever) and painted it with POR 15. This was last summer. So far so good. The diffs, axles, skid plates, chassis, propeller shaft, hitch etc. all look great after my spring cleaning wash last week.

I got mine from West Coast Coating. They're super nice, call them if you have questions about the product. They have a starter kit if you want to try out POR-15 and see how well it'll work for you.

Here is the way to buy it: six small cans, one is plenty for spot painting unless you want to paint the whole undercariage, it adhears to the rust but will not stick to existing smooth paint-so dont waste it on good areas, also, once its opened paint will get thick within a month- that's why small cans is the way to go.

Undercoating 2008 4Runner

I just finished undercoating my 2008 that I purchased used with 32,000 miles. I've had good luck with applying the rust convertor and then using Truck Bed Liner spray paint. The Truck Bed Liner drys non-tacky and if any rust develops underneath, it pops off and lets you know where to focus during semi-annual inspections. The attached picture is during the application of the rust convertor. I went back after this picture to get to the small spots I missed. After 24 hrs, I applied the Truck Bed Liner. Looks nice and clean now. Best regards, Doug

I use Home Depot rust convertor for and regular frame spray paint after convertor hardens to a black phosphorus oxide finish. I stopped using POR15 while ago because it creates finish that is too thick and tends to flake off later.

My neighbor recommended a product called Loctite Extend Rust Neutralizer.

It turns surface rust into a black neutral surface that can be painted. He used cans, but I bought the spray “paint”.

I don’t have a long term review, but so far, so good. My neighbor highly recommended it. He used it on his car’s exterior. I’m working on my 4R frame.

Member “<<<<“ pretty much answered your question. POR15 and the Loctite product are both rust converting primers, so you wouldn’t spray one on top of the other. The Loctite instructions say to use oil-based paint over it.

Any paint type coating will chip and flake. Herculiner is the most durable linerundercoat I've found but I still wouldn't put it under any of my trucks. You should go with oil - fluid film, bar and chain people use all sorts of stuff. This is what I've found to be the best, lifetime treatment with a single application for most areas underneath, A arms and diffs will need touch up every few years - Ultimate oil undercoating guide (DIY Waxoyl)

The conversion products use and acid, usually phosphoric, one listed here uses gallic, however if you cover rust in oil it won't rust further making this step unnecessary

Seconding that older comment. Wear protective gear when applying this stuff!
