Unfair for 3rd gens?

I don't know if this is me just over reacting or if it's the truth. Over last year of building into my 4runner I've noticed that some products such as prerunner fender flares and etc; seem to skip the 3rd generation yotas. Same scenario with headlights at least for me. Point is I feel that modding a 4runner is a tad more difficult for 3rd gens? Am I right or just over reacting?

Definitely know what your talking about. Headlights for example. Can't buy nice projector headlights, gotta make em. Yet the older ones you can. And of corse newer models come with projectors.

Exactly! Certain things are not available for the 3rd gens but available to everything before and after. What happened to us? Lol ConstantFix

Jipped us out big time. But oh we'll. teaches a guy how to make a lot of his own stuff. At least it does me. I'm getting ready to do my own projector retrofit. Pretty cheap too. As long as you've already got aftermarket clear housings, you just need the projectors. Which run around $50 on amazon.

Here's the deal.

Most of the sruff for 3rd Gen runners is the SAME as for 1st Gen TACOMAs.

Not 1st gen TOYOTAs, but TACOMAs, as in the 1995.5-2004.

The 1996-2002 4Runner and the 1995.5-2004 Tacoma are almost the exact same thing. just different bodies, and frames. That's why you'll see most of the stuff listed for a Tacoma, also listed as working on a 4Runner.

Look up stiff for the 1st gen Tacoma, and I'm willing to bet you'll find the stuff you're looking for.

Thanks Doc2012 I never knew that. Knowing that the 1st gen tacomas and 3rd gen 4runners have similar products that's came be shared will definitely help me out with my build. It just pisses me off that websites and manufacturers totally leave out 3rd gen products but produce products for 1st 2nd and 4+

I've also noticed that my '95 T100 has interchangeable parts with my '02 4Runner. They both also have the 5VZFE.

Not a problem man.

I do agree with you. The ammount of crap out there for other generations is rediculous compaired to the 3rd Gen. BUT, as long as you know what you're looking for, and have the willingness to slightly modify some of the stuff you're looking for, you'll be perfectly fine with getting stuff for a 1st Gen Tacoma.

OBVIOUSLY, there are some major differences, but, here's a short list on what IS interchangable:

Basically the entire drivetrain, with the EXCEPTION of the rear axle(except for me. :D) Anything off a Tacoma, again, except the rear axle, will work on a 4Runner. Transmissions, transfercases, front differentials, Hubs, engines, shocks, CV axles, Ect ect. It's all the same. As long as it's got the same engine. You CAN NOT take a 2.7L Tacoma transmission and bolt it up to a 3.4L motor. That's why there's so many people that do the manual hub conversion. The spindles just bolt right up to the upper and lower control arms. Think of it this way. ANYTHING on the front of the truck/4Runner is swapable.

Think of the Tacoma as a chopped 4Runner, or the 4Runner as an extended Tacoma. The main difference between the FRAMES, is that the 4Runner frame is FULLY boxed all the way back, while the Tacoma frame is boxed to the back of the cab.

MOST Tacoma's, with the exception of the TRD Tacoma, have an "8.4"" rear diff and axle housing, along with leaf springs. That is NOT compatable with YOUR 4Runner. (See build thread below to see one that is. tehehe.)

HOWEVER, if you were to find a rear diff from a TRD Tacoma(those are usually E-locked), it will fit into your Runner rear diff as long as you have an e-locker, or so the e-locker mod.

I've also noticed that my '95 T100 has interchangeable parts with my '02 4Runner. They both also have the 5VZFE.

The Motors are the same, though some have differences. I know for a fact that the 96-98 4Runners and the 99 4Runners have different injectors.

Usually everything will be the same for the 5VZFE, but small things like the injectors and suck might have some differences. But, you can just take the injectors out of your motor, and put them into the other one. It'll still work just the same...

its true, when looking for parts i found that there is little to none, so i started to mod parts from other cars to work for my 4runner, like my brush bar is from a land rover.

There are tons of brush guards on sale for 3rd Gen 4Runner's.

Just so you know the projectors on amazon suck and they don't come with the hid bulbs ballasts or the harness. Definantly do your research before you invest In projectors.

Doc2012 is it the same scenario with exterior body parts, for example fiberglass flares? If I purchased a 1st gen Tacoma prerunner style flares from fiberwerks or etc; with slight modifications I could put it on the runner? And thanks again for the reply it's been really helpful

The Tacomas have different hoods, front fenders, side marker lights, headlights and grille.

You should be able to get them done with slight modifications to them.

I would call the company and see what they say.

The mounting points are just about the same. There are 4(?) bolts on the core support, and two on the rocker.

Look at the people that have done the tacorunner mod. There are slight differences, but the mounting points should be the same.

Tacoma prerunner fenders will work. If you call McNeil Racing they make 3rd gen 4Runner fenders but aren't listed on the website, kind of annoying to work with them though.

Glassworks unlimited also makes front fenders for our generation. I picked a set up a few months ago for mine.

Thanks for the valuable info Doc2012! I have a little broader scope when I'm trying to find parts for me 3rd gen.

And also thank you for your service to our great country.

How did you find them for our generation? We're they listed online or did you call in for them? I can't find our gen on the site and I'm about to order 1st gen Tacoma ones

Ya? We'll I don't necessarily want hid's. What's crappy about the projectors?

I have tacoma fenders on mine but the alignment isn't exactly right. You have to use tacoma corner lights and the hood doesn't line up correctly. The tacoma fender drops about a half inch more then the 4runner fender.

But almost everything on my front end is tacoma or tundra parts. Toyota is pretty good at using universal parts.
