Uninstalling aftermarket remote start... some questions

Howdy -

I'm looking to take my 4Runner back to its stock port installed remote entry/security system. It has an aftermarket system on it now that works - most of the time. It's a bit of a rats nest of wires, so I don't have a lot of confidence in it. I know it was installed in 2002 when the 4Runner was new (but I'm not owner #1).

There are two boxes - one long one and one small one. The smaller one is tied directly to the ignition tumbler.

I noticed part of a key (!) was poking out of it, so I investigated.... there is a brand new Ilco aftermarket 4Runner key wedged into the box. There was paper wedged around it to (presumably) prevent it from rattling.

What the?? Why is there a key in here?

One more question - is there an easy way to identify which Toyota system my 4Runner has? It has the Toyota-branded security blinking light where one of the switch blanks would be (but it isn't blinking, so it's obviously disconnected). I'd like to find a wiring diagram so I can reconnect it. I imagine there was only one system commonly installed on 4Runner SR5s in 2002. If it helps, my 4Runner was sold by Toyota in PA, not through one of the regional distributors.

Thats hilarious! The spare key in the box is to allow remote starting when you have a transponder key system. The wires around the key energize and excite the transponder to give a signal to the ECU to go ahead and start. Since you have a metal key in there.... It ain't doing nothing!

IMO, pull all that sh#tty wiring out and let the next owner buy a new alarm. No one (who knows anything) would let a $100 keyless or alarm system from buying a Sport Edition 4Runner.

Ha, that's great! I kind of figured that is what it was for. So it's probably doing nothing whatsoever? I only briefly glanced at the ignition tumbler, but it looked like the wires coming from the box simply made a loop around the tumbler. That would make sense given your description - I guess those wires are trying to trick the receiver that would be in the tumbler on a 4Runner Limited.

I really only pulled things apart to get a look at what I need to tackle. I just assumed that the wires eventually plugged into something, even though I couldn't see or feel anything (I only took off the knee panel).

Well, I guess I just got a "free" spare key.

And, yeah, I have no illusions of keeping this system or installing another. My 4Runner sits in the garage 99% of the time (it's a very occasional use vehicle). Frankly, if someone wants to break into it and steal it, it's theirs. Have fun, just take it out of the country please. I don't want to see it again!
