If i am driving my 1999 SR5 3.4L Automatic (stock wheels, suspension) up a slope while monitoring my scangauge II transmission fluid temperature, i can sense when the torque converter unlocks in 4th gear and the rpms jump up a bit (500-600rpms). Please note, it is NOT kicking down to 3rd gear. The temperature of the tranny fluid will jump 20-30 degrees while making the climb. These are just normal highway hills in Missouri. No mountains or offroad. Cruise control off and overdrive on. As soon as i crest the hill, the rpms drop a bit and my tranny fluid drops somewhat quickly.
No trailer, no heavy cargo load.
My question, is this normal? I understand it is the torque converter unlocking but from there i am lost. I am somewhat new to understanding how automatic transmissions work mechanically, so any information or knowledge is appreciated.
