i just got quoted for a special order Limited Blizzard in NE today with third row seat.

I understand edmunds doesnt include this TDA cost which is shear bs. Never paid that on my other toyota's

Here is what edmunds quoted me as (invoice prices)
Limted 4x4 base - 36,218
Nav system - 1,215
3rd Row seat - 812
destination - 800
Special color -176
Floor mats ---135
Total Price - 39356

I offered 600 over invoice. so that comes to 39956

Here is what dealer sent me (vehicle Inquiry report)
base - 35024
Nav 1216
3rd row seat 812
destination 800
Color 176
mats 135

TDA 788
Gasoline 10.3
Holdback 796
WFR 398

total price 40155.3 if I am correct. so final price $40,755.3

is this the best I can get. I told them 600 OVER invoice, and I see about a $799 discrepancy (the gas and TDA). What is this and why should I or anyone pay?

I called several reputable dealers and they told me THE TDA is something all toyota's are charged. What the f.... This is not included on edmunds or kbb. Why should I be responsible for dealer advertising. that is a business expense they should take. What are others experience with buyingi in NE. Hopefully this helps others here also looking to buy.

For the same config -less the Blizzard Pearl paint, I paid $40K even in LA (not incl. tax and license)

Just for others looking at it I want to point out that the higher base price on Edmunds is equal to the holdback and WFR (there is another discussion here about the holdback which is why I point this out)

...... or make then throw in an extended warranty, gap ins.,life ins. and Lojack to level it out and seal the deal if your financing with Toyota. Or throw in parts and accessories you want.
That's what I did but I paid more then what you were offered and I did'nt get the 3rd row.Dealers get stuff like that dirt cheap.

If 39900 seems fair to you then offer that. It is a reasonable offer.

I agree. If you feel comfortable with your offer of $39,956 then stick to your guns. Right now Toyota isn't exactly moving cars right now. If you walk, they will call you. (Didn't mean that to sound like a movie line):naughty:

Can someone translate, what the hull is TDA and WFR

Holdback is not addedto the price. The dealer is padding the price.

Personally, I would not pay for any of these bogus add-ons.

There are 2 invoices. There is the invoice that the manufacturer pays for the car. A 4WD SR5 is $27XXX. Then there is invoice which includes dealer holdback and financial reserve. It is $927 on an SR5. That brings the "customer invoice" to $28XXX. Basically, this is what Toyota has calculated that it costs the dealer to keep an inventory and keep the lights on at the store. This amount is INCLUDED in MSRP and should NOT be added on top of your "agreed" price. Finally, there are advertising and doc fees. The advertising fees in WV for an SR5 are ~$400. I get employee pricing, and according to Toyota, I still have to pay this. Finally, there are usually doc fees. These are based on the dealer handling the paperwork with your state. Some states have maximums; some do not. Call your local DMV and see how much it should cost for doc fees w/ that particular dealer. They should be able to tell you. Usually, after you've agreed on a price, the dealer will pad some profit here, so agree on this from the beginning.

My personal feeling: On a vehicle like the 4Runner that is moving quite well and doesn't have a huge production run, I'd offer "Customer Invoice" + $1000 (this $1000 is including the advertising fee, not before the advert fee). Come armed with the actual cost for doc fees to keep them from padding that. With that price, you've paid, what I feel, is a fair price for the vehicle, you aren't wasting your time with a re****ed-low offer, and you aren't allowing the dealer to blindside you w/ additional fees. Lay it out all up front.

If I didn't get employee pricing, here is how I'd offer my local dealer on the SR5 I have on order.

Customer Invoice: $28132
Options: $3645
Destination: $800
Over invoice: $1000 ($406 in advert cost, $600 true profit for the dealer)
Offer before taxes: $33577 (MSRP is $36300)

Doc fees: $50 (this is what I paid on my GTI, should be the same for Toyota)
Title & License: $30
Tax: $1682.85
Out the Door: $35340

I think that you'll get your offer accepted immediately because you are showing that you know what the actual cost is and you aren't trying to squeeze every penny out of them by playing the game. You bypass all the bullshit by basically agreeing that you will pay them a reasonable price for a reasonable service.

Finally, learn how to use Excel and calculate this shit (especially payments and interest spent on the life of the loan) as you negotiate. If you go the "what is your best price" route, keep this handy for apples to apples comparisons so that you don't get a too-good-to-be-true price from a dealer that reams you on fees afterward.

This is very strange.
NOW I got another Vehicle Inquiry report for a 4runner Blizzard not yet in production. Dealer said no VIN yet. Gave me an inventory detail print out when I finalized all options.

Everything is same except now the TDA is less! Wow wtf?
Am i complaining, no! Happy with that. All other prices same. Saved a few hundred.

Thus far I am paying still 600 over invoice, but cost came down a little. Will deposit on friday and see what happens. This is a nice deal for me and I hope i get the 4runner in 2 or 3 months from now!

TDA = toyota dealer advertisement. This is not included on invoice price on edmunds or kbb. I also checked with a very reputable dealer and she told me all cars are charged this.
WFR = whole sale financial reserve. this is added to base +dealer holdback to get to invoice (36210)

I agree with your pricing, but disagree that any dealer will immediately take the deal. I used to be in the car business and understand how dealerships work. Reputable dealers will generally take the deal, but I have found many dealerships want to play the game despite knowing they are on a deal they will take.

As long as you do your research on both the new car and the car you will be trading in if applicable, make an offer for a FAIR price and stick to it, you will get the deal done. Remember, supply and demand are a factor in determining a fair price. Secondly, be realistic with your trade in. Many people think their trade-in is worth more that it really is. I have found that if you look up your car on kbb.com and calculate the fair value (regardless of how nice it is) you will be close to what they see as your trade in value. Another thing to note is that dealers do not add for low miles when calculating your trade.

I checked with a few people around here who have also bot toyotas. guess what TDA what??????? None of them paid this charge on other toyotas.

Whiskecop u sound like you work for dealer. I am not paying this charge. Guess what, if toyota wants my business, then they will accept my reduced offer. I will reduce it by 500. Its not even the end of month and they sounded like they were willing to negotiate. i will be waiting a little longer looks like

Unless they paid only invoice, as shown on cars.com or edmunds, they paid the fee. ;) If they paid $1000 over invoice, ~$400 of that went to TDA. This is a true dealer cost, so they will pay it out of the "profit" they're making on the sale. Like I said, offer them a price w/ all fees included except for tax, title, reg, and license.

I personally think Toyota should build this into the cost to make car buying simple, but dealers have the upper hand when things aren't simple.

Well deal is final
Blizzard Pearl Limited with Nav and 3rd row seat and mats. Special ordered and should be here in 2 months.

paid invoice! Dealer was great! shocked they didnt give hard time about coming down on price. In essence I didnt really pay the TDA for the price I wanted to pay. Dealer still making money. everyone happy. Cant believe it. and they had blizzard limited in showroom however NO 3rd row. I was at a few other dealers this week and they wanted near MSRP still.

Congrats! Glad you were able to get it at invoice - that's gotta make ya feel good!

The dealerships elecric bill is an actual cost....

The dealerships electric bill is an actual cost & they will pay that out of the profit they make but if it is not a line item on the actual Toyota Factory invoice I'm not willing to discus it when negotiating the price of a vehicle. It is just the cost of doing business. It is that simple.
->
I work from the invoice, I expect them to make a resonable profit but I am not willing to grab my ankles either. IMO a reasonable profit is $1K or less for the SR5 I am looking at. As a general rule 3 to 3.5% above the actual Toyota invoice (less incentives) most businesses can survive on this margin.

Good Luck
