I was extremely disappointed driving one for a day. The GX seems like a perfect car for me, a 4Runner that’s better for daily but it was a poor attempt at luxury.

The v8 was smooth, power didn’t feel like a v8 but gas mileage did. Interior looked very out of date (before the new nav).

There’s a reason my local dealer always has GXs sitting around on the lot. It’s just not a 60-70k car.

Mileage isn’t bad on a gx. My gx easily gets 23 on the highway.

Yes a 70k RX is just ridiculous at this point. Talk about getting bent over.

Is the GX more stable on the highway (akin to having more positive caster than the 4Runner?)

$70k RX is pretty nuts. I had to see for myself. Sure enough, my dealer has one at $67k MSRP.

GX is very similar to the 4R on the highway. It's heavier. You can feel it for sure. Otherwise they share the same front suspension and steering parts as a KDSS 4Runner. So it drives very similar to a KDSS 4Runner. Just a bit heavier steering feel from the AWD. Steering feel is similar to the limited. Interior noise is exactly the same in both. But the LX has less drivetrain vibration because of the v8's inherent smoothness and lower cruising rpms vs the higher revving and not so well balanced v6. The rear air suspension in the Luxury trim can also a bit smoother with the adjustable shocks. But it's not a huge improvement IMO. Incidentally - the GX air suspension at the lower highway height does increase caster, so it probably has slightly higher caster at speed when it drops the butt down.

The GX is very planted, smooth and quiet on the freeway. It has acoustic glass (unlike the 4runner). The V8 is not overly powerful but feels great.

Acoustic side glass was new for 2021. I haven't driven a 21 or 22 model year. Might be a nice improvement. Old ones measured the same 68db at 60mph.

Older models had the same laminated glass as the 4runner. Almost every car should have laminated side glass now or soon. It's a fmvss requirement. Nice thing about the GX is that you could retrofit the acoustic glass to the older models since it's available. Not really an option for the 4R.

Edit: Toyota changed to thicker side glass to the Tacoma in 2020. They don't call it "acoustic" so I'm not sure what it is or if they didn't want to use the term. So we'll likely see it in the next gen 4R. Probably too late in the game for changing the 5th gen.

we have both a 4Runner and GX, and for those who say one is definitively better than the other probably have only driven / spent time in one or the other.
- Both are excellent vehicles with dated infomats (hold the 20+ 4Runners and 2022 GX's)
- Both have great motors for what they are, but the GX gets the nod on the V8 which is incredibly smooth
- Both have adequate features inside and are very similar in the grand scheme of things, neither are even on the same wavelength of a 2020 Mercedes GLS350 or 450 but for what they are they are great.
- Both look a little quirky but the 4Runner definitely looks better stock (more masculine)
- Both can be modded to suite and the GX does look killer when tastefully modded.
- Both are SUPER reliable and that's the reason we have them, living in the city taking the car to the dealer is a nightmare so I like when things don't break...

for those asking, i started this tread on the GX forum, but the biggest tire you can put on the GX is 275/65/18 (stock wheels) without any rubbing or any modifications:

Glad that thread helped someone! I was on the fence about the 265's but ended up going with the 275's. both sizes look 10x better than the little dinky stock tire size!

Unfortunately I’ll be rolling on the stock tires for a couple weeks. The Toyo at3’s are back ordered.

I looked hard at the GX and ended up with the 4R. I could not get past the front grill or swing open back door.

I recently totaled my 2000 LX470.
