unsolved mystery....please help AGAIN!!!!

Okay I thought i had it figured out but I guess I don't. My back up lights were not working so I put in a new neutral start switch and Walaaaaaaaa!!! I had back up lights...for a month. Now the lights come on intermitantly...what would cause this and how can i fix it? Thanks for your help guys.

thanks for the tip! Can anyone confirm this? I was almost certain that the switch was contained in the neutral start switch which is bolted to the passenger side of the transmission.
 
easy way to check is to disconnet the nuetral switch and turn the ignition switch on. shift the lever to r and see if it lights up if it those the switch is not located in the safety switch

sorry i couldnt reply sooner, its been so busy at work. but any how. i was doing some home work on your problem. and found out that the rev. switch is located in the safety switch. its the manual trans thats in the center councel. there is a test i want you to do. turn your car on, put it in rev. and check if the lights are working if not i want you to disconnect the safety neutral switch and find a red wire and a red with yellow strip in the wire harness. test if red wire has 12 volts, this should be hot with the key on. if you have 12 volts i want you to short the red wire to the red with yellow strip. what this will do is by pass the neutral switch and should light up the rev. light. if it doesn't light up with the red and red w/ yellow shorted there is an open wire connection between the switch and the lights. if any of these instrutions are confusing or having a hard time understanding . stop what your doing and tell me whats going on.
 
Thank you for your answer. How do I short one wire to the other? I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to auto mechanics. Thank you again for your help.
 
The reverse light switch is on the transmission. It's called the PNP switch. Have some one in the truck move the shifter into reverse, then neutral slowly while you stand in the back and see if the lights go on. If it flashes then it sounds like the PNP switch needs to be aligned correctly on the transmission. If it doesn't turn on at all, then the switch is defective or the fuse is loose.

You can also try to put the shifter in reverse and try to start the truck. (make sure you step on the brakes while starting) If it starts, turn off the engine and put the shifter in 2nd and start it again. If it starts, then the switch is bad, if it doesn't start that means that the PNP switch just needs adjustment. There is one bolt on top of the PNP switch that holds it in place. Loosen it and move it either forward or backwards a little (about 1 mm) and tighen it back up and try the reverse lights again.

Thank you for the information. I'm gonna try and take a look at it this weekend.

You mentioned a fuse might be loose. Where would the fuse for the Neutral Start Switch be located? Sorry for the dumb questions.

Guess I would be shocked if the switch was bad. I put a new one in a month ago and it worked fine...now nothing!
