Unusually dirty rear end. Design issue?

Does anyone else's rear end (tailgate/hatch area) get unusually dirty in the winter/rain?

I can't keep the back of my 5th gen clean for more than a few days. For whatever reason, moisture and dirt kick up back there so easily. I've never really noticed this on any other SUV's I've driven before.

Just the nature of the design, everything gets whipped up and swirls around behind the bumper area and gets the rear end dirty it sucks that’s for sure but nothing will stop it...
 
Happens in varying levels with any caped back vehicle. My Mazda 3 hatch had the same issue. My Expedition was as bad as my 4R, but a good wax helps.

That's what I figured. It's really a non issue honestly. I was just curious to see if others could confirm. I've noticed other SUV's don't really have this problem.
 
Our T4s are dirt magnets. I use Rain-X on the rear window and camera and wax on the rest of the hatch. Still a dirt magnet, but cleans easier.
 
It's a Toyota thing, here is our other Toyota. What color is it?

There was dirt between the rear license plate and the clear cover. Washed the cover and still could not see the plate.

Nope, mine stays spotless throughout the winter. Must be a design flaw with YOURS.
 
Rear spoilers actually have a function. Divert clean air down over the hatch window.

And guess what they actually work. At least on 4th gens.
 
Let me just go on and save you hours of wiping down your interior later: if you're ever just cruising down a dirt road and decide its a good idea to roll that back window down - just don't. It just sucks all that dust inside your truck.
 
Funny stuff. I can't stand the way the inside of the hatch collects tree needles (or any debris). Same thing with my 4th gen. Drove me crazy. Open her up and....a collection of crap up around the hinges and down by the tail lights. Great design. I was hoping for 5th gen magic and it would all go away. Nope. Sad face.

This is solid advice lol.

I was driving around on the sand dunes of Glamis... with my rear window down.

It didn’t take much to create a massive mess inside.
 
I live a town (covers 75 sq/mi) that is 95% dirt roads.
Going slow, trying to keep the dust down, it settles quickly & thickly on the back of the 4runner. To the point that I can't see out the back window.
But once I get on the highway that bisects the town 95% of the dust blows off.
Or if I park so that the ever-present wind blows it off.

The turbulence back there is to be expected. I would expect nothing less from something that has the aero profile of a refrigerator.

Similar reason we see boat-tails on semi-trucks... helps efficiency and also keeps the dirt/dust down.
