this is what toyota told me. Not covered under warranty:

"Tech inspected vehicle and confirmed wheels locked up. Got into shop with dolleys. Lifted vehicle and removed rear brake drums and found rear shoes are stuck to the rear drum and also e-brake e-springs had come loose. Suspect vehicle had sat for a long time.

Cleaned and lubed all rear drums components and also reinstalled e-brake springs. Removed rust ridge on drum. Test drove vehicle and everything operating ok. $139

Flat bed tow 25 miles $180. Insurance is covering $100+


Does this make sense? Car only gets drive occasionally. Have put on 7k miles in 2 yrs. Is this not enough driving?

Sounds like the parking brake rusted together. Probably not a good idea to leave it engaged for long periods of time in Minnesota.

sounds about right.

you didn't even mention if you had flat spots on the tires cause I know they have if its sitting for long gaps between drives.

I mean the front disc's will start to rust just sitting about 5+ days between use.

My thought is, if it's under the bumper to bumper warranty, and the cause was a loose spring not allowing the pads to retract, that is a vehicle defect.

Unless you parked in a puddle, I can't see the pads getting stuck to the point of not releasing.

If you have ever worked on brakes, those springs don't just pop off by themselves. They are usually a pain to get off.

But I am not a mechanic, this is just my opinion.

This is exactly what our indpendent mechanic said to.

No flat spots. It gets driven for sure every 2 weeks. It never sits long enough to even drain the battery.
