Updated Lift Thread

I have been thinking we need an updated lift info thread. The one we have now is great, but it doesn't go into specifics all that much and doesn't incorporate tires into it. I was thinking of trying to pool all the information that is scattered across this forum and creating a comprehensive lift thread. It would be very much like Ripcord's buyer's guide.

The thread would be composed of all the different lifts out there with specific information and linked threads for examples. It would also explain what size tires work with what lifts and what is needed for 35's and such. It would cover rims and backspacing as well, since those are key when lifting. I feel it would help eliminate a lot of repetitive q's like "what is the biggest tire for a stock 3rd gen?".

I'm creating this thread to see if anyone wants to help out or has any suggestions. It will probably take me a few weeks to get everything together and create the new thread. I was thinking once completed I could PM steezemcqueen and he could update the current thread so it remains a sticky. If people want to help with a portion that would be awesome and speed the process along. We could split up the types of lift OME, Toytec, Tundra ect. and compile it all together with each person getting credit for their portion. I'm limited in my experience with lifts and all the details, but I have read enough threads and will research a lot to make the thread as accurate as possible.

I don't know if it's worth the time, but I find the lift thread to be a bit lacking in detail and specifics. Also no disrespect to the original creators of the lift thread, I just feel we have a lot more info now and small details that people are interested in. I know people can search, but it would be nice to find it all and pictures to compare in one place instead of spending an hour or more searching.

Also I could add an armor section for all the new bumpers, skids and sliders that have come out.

no disrespect taken. i agree that it does need updating. i have been planning on doing more work on it but it just never seems to happen. I would be happy to update the current thread with anything that anyone wants to add.
 
I'm sure the current thread on lifts could be cleaned and thinned to just information and remove the questions. That shorten it. Then add new pertinent info, like how to fit 35s. Most everything else seems to be covered.
 
I'm going to work on a sample tonight. I will focus on the Tundra TRD coil lift, so it will give you an idea of where I'm going with this. I agree most things have been covered, but they are in 8 different places. I just plan to consolidate all the info together. Current members have seen the many different threads, but new members are starting from scratch and have no idea what to look for or where to find it. I just hope to eliminate all the 3" lift threads out there or at least have a concise thread to reference to.

Unfortunately I haven't finished the Tundra portion yet. I've had to watch my daughter the last few nights alone, so no time to work on it. I'm trying to fit as much info as possible, but there is a lot out there. I should be done by tomorrow though and looking forward to some feedback.
 
While I think the lift thread is one of the best and most useful on the forum, I agree it needs to go more in depth. Mostly into the options within each type of lift. For example, discuss all of the OME coils by number and how they do, discuss different brands of shocks and why you need to replace them during a lift, etc..

Here are a few threads you can gather ideas from.
Forget that they are for tacoma, its the general layout of information and quantity I want you to take a look at.

Thanks for the links. Yeah I plan to go into a lot more depth for each coil (lift height, pictures, what they should be used with, coil rate, ect.) There will be an intro portion with the basics why to lift, what is gained, and what the different types of lifts. Also the differences in stock ride heights relative to amount of lift and what types of lifts are good certain driving styles, goals and situations. It will be pretty comprehensive and lengthy, but should clear up a lot of questions and get the main ideas out, so more detailed questions can be asked.

Unfortunately I won't have all of those pretty pictures like in the second link, but I will do my best with the time and resources I have. I will miss things and corrections will need to be made I'm sure. Also I will probably post a new thread to use as a trial run for everyone to critique and offer suggestion before letting steeze put it in the current lift sticky. That way steeze doesn't have to make all the corrections for me.

Bear in mind this whole update will take me alone probably around a month. Sounds like a long time, but I work full time and have a 1 year old at home. I get ~1-1.5 free hours at night, so work will be slow and I also want to make it as good as I can.

Hey SCRunner, Im also glad your doing this. As you know (we were bouncing comments around in another thread regarding the Tundra lift) I just installed my Tundra/LC lift. I changed from OME 881/890 to Tundra TRD/LC 8 wraps. I have hub to fender measurements for both and could give you detailed opinions on ride on/off-road on the OME and it's weight carrying capacity, and on-road of the Tundra/LC lift. (I have yet to wheel the new lift setup....SOON) I was going to start my own thread with an in-depth comparison between the two once I got to try the new lift offroad and load it with some more weight. If you want any info from me just shoot me a PM.

Yeah if you made that thread it would help out a lot. It's good to have comparisons and reviews of the different lifts. I will just link the thread into the appropriate spots for people to read. Thanks!

What amount of lift did you get with the 5100's and Tundra coils? 2nd setting correct on the 5100's?

Not that I matter much, but I support this idea wholeheartedly.

Everyone who visits this site matters. :thumb3: Even if you don't have much to contribute at the time you will in time. I personally have experience with the Tundra lift only and knew nothing about 3rd gens two years ago. I've just read the threads and learned from them.
 
-Can the tundra 5100's be used with '99 tall coils, OME coils, etc?
-how much lift can I expect from a tundra 5100/TRD lift at each setting, what was used as a baseline to get these measurements, and does ride suffer by upping the pre-load too much (4/5, 5/5 settings)?
-what top hats are needed?

These are a few questions I have off the top of my head.
 
Ok good, those were some of the things I was going to answer in my write up. I have to research the Tundra 5100 and other coils a little, but I think the answer is yes, I'm not positive though. It is not advisable as the Tundra coils are thicker and wider than the 4runner coils, so the coils may not sit properly on the Tundra perch. If anyone has a definite and correct answer please let me know.

I will go over the lift gains from the 5100's in the thread, but lift measurements are subjective to the vehicle. Different years, different stock heights and amounts of sag. It will be a general lift amount and mary vary.

Top hats are from the 4runner/Tacoma.

Keep the questions coming as I can't think of all of them. These will help eliminate the repetitive questions and help clear it up.
 
yeah i hear people saying that you cant or shouldnt run the trundra set up past the 3rd setting... well why?! im one of those people when you tell me i can do something, im gonna do it just to prove you wrong -everyone said "you can run 285s on stock height..." well i did, sure i have a little rubbing but not bad and only at hard flex. so yeah this will be nice, i look forward to this addition

It's not more of you can't, it's just not recommended. The typical lift from the tundra coils alone is ~2" +/- .15". For each perch on the 5100's it is .65". Basically the second perch is 2.5-2.75" of lift and the 3rd perch is 3.15-3.35" of lift. Common consensus is that over 3" is pushing it and over 3.5" and you are asking for problems. That is the idea behind the settings and not going over the 3rd setting.

Now with an aftermarket bumper and winch this will change things because it will weigh down the front and lower the amount of lift. Also with the higher setting will be a decrease in ride quality. Hope that clears up things a bit.
 
This is a great SC. I have never posted asked a question about this, but with the Tundra - LC coil lift, it always seems as if the rear is ass high no matter how high the TRDs are jacked up. People then counter that by saying go with 890s or 891s in the rear. I was always under the impression that OME springs give a harsh ride? Ok, so now your 4runner sits level or is just slightly raked as it should be (unlike with the LC coils in the rear) but isn't the rear now 10x rougher than the front? I'm talking unloaded here BTW because I will never have the rear constantly loaded down.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like there needs to be a coil in between the OME 890/891 and the LC coil. The LC coil is tall and not very thick, while the OME is short and thick. As far as spring rates and stuff--still learning. Just an idea to put in your thread if you run out of them.
 
ok that makes sense. but more at what i was getting at with that, is thats the sort of info i(as im sure others on here) would like to see in a lift thead, not just "cant do it", or "dont do it" ect, we want to know why, we want to know what you know sorta thing
 
Its the OME shocks that give harsh ride, not the coils.. except the 891, its a extra load coil.

There are a few 3.5" lift coils, but they are hard to find. I know Downey makes a 3.5" HD coil. You can also pair a small spacer with the 890/891's.
