Updating gps navigation...

I have a 2014 4runner that the gps needs updating. The solution is a new memory chip from the dealership with the cost north of $100. Is there an alternative or do I have to go through the dealership.

I'm at the exact same impass... If it were a free update from toyota, I might do it, but I think the OEM nav is trash, not intuitive and is more trouble than it's worth. I'm just going to stick with google maps, when I have cell reception, and Osmand when I don't. they're both ten times better.

You can actually pre-download maps in Google Maps for when you think you will be without reception in the future. It's pretty handy.

I just got a Garmin GPS with free updates. Paying for updates from Toyota just seems stupid to me. If it was a few bucks - ok - but not $100 - kind of insulting. The Garmin works well and I can easily move it to any vehicle. The only issue is it did not come with an A/C adapter for doing updates at home; and Garmin wanted like $70 for theirs.

Isn't it just powered off the USB adapter to your computer while you update? That's how I update my NUVI (model somethingsomething) that I've had for a few years. Maybe they changed something?

Yes, but it's really slow and takes forever to charge the battery if it's low. Once you get it charged you can leave it in the car and it will maintain it; but you can't do updates that way. So, I got an aftermarket adapter that works; but Garmin sees it as not one of theirs and gives error messages - but it works. Updates take a lot of time. You have to download the update and then transfer it to the Garmin. I like the way it works though. There is a learning curve on how to operate, set up routes, etc; however there are several Youtube videos out there to help. There are a few different models that differ somewhat in operation - so you need to be specific and get the right one.
