Upgrade 2018 to Support CarPlay?

I had the Alpine ilx-107 in my limited 4th gen. It’s the only true wireless CarPlay as it has both wifi/Bluetooth connection. I plan to install the same alpine in my 5th gen [emoji56]

In looking at the various answers/solutions out there I'm still left with some questions about integration with factory items. For instance:

- SXM and GPS Antenna: Can be integrated with a harness/adapter.
- SXM Factory Receiver: I'm guessing this cannot be used, correct?
- Bluetooth Mic: Obviously the new headunit will have bluetooth, but is there an adapter that connects the factory mic to the aftermarket headunit?
- Stock USB Port: Sounds like that can be plugged into new HU with the right adapter.
- Steering Wheel Controls: This integrates with appropriate adapter harness.

Appreciate any insight.

There is a Sirius and GPS antenna adapter. Crutchfield doesn't include it with their stereo stuff, but it's available and worth purchasing.

On factory receiver, do you mean whatever is associated with your account -- or the physical hardware? The latter = no.

Not that I'm aware of, you have to connect the aftermarket mic.

Yes, the adapter coverts the OEM usb port to the head unit. It also charges your phone at whatever wattage the head unit provides - so with the right head unit, provides a faster rate of charging (my Kenwood DMX-905S charges quickly even while using android auto)

The majority of aftermarket stereos require the idatalink maestro module. Crutchfield is definitely the place to look as far as what you actually need to buy.

That is the Scosche kit painted black.

Metra has a black version but many prefer the scosche one.

The factory sirius receiver is definitely proprietary to work with the factory stereo. I think it would be a stretch to see it working with anything but.

I think most aftermarket head units are sirius capable, I think you just need to make sure the head unit has a receiver built in or that a receiver is available. Would be shocked if Sirius gave you any fuss about transferring.

If you get a truck with XM stock, they have an adapter i have used successfully to add the shark fin antenna to a pioneer head unit.

Dont have time to read this thread, but why upgrade a truck when for less than 600 bucks you can have a modern head unit with carplay and android auto that uses all the stock bells and whistles (including the USB ports already in your truck)?? and a shroud that looks bone stock??

I had been looking for a dash kit to match the rest of the interior trim for about a year. Wasn't interested in painting the silver Schosche. Stumbled upon the Metra 99-8227CHG. Kind of a janky install, but I got it all sorted today. The match is "close enough" for me.

I see a lot of talk in the thread about the Alpine 9in floating unit. I have been running this for almost 6 months and thought I would share some feedback.

So far I have experienced zero issues with the unit. I had it installed professionally with the harness from Metra. It works best in Apple Carplay mode. I say this because the stock interface is a little messy and can be hard to navigate / get used to. A quick example - making a phone call requires pressing the middle menu button, then phone, then recents/favorites, then the contact, THEN the call button...!

Siri eyesfree integration is amazing though. Whether using it in Apple Carplay mode or stock, siri response is quick and works well. As I mentioned from the get-go, I use this in Apple Carplay mode 99% of the time and I can't think of any complaints. The fact that you can use Google maps within Apple Carplay is about the best most underrated thing that happened in tech last year. I typically just have Google maps up and running like you would with a car's stock GPS. I can tap to go home or work in 2 seconds, or tap the microphone within Google maps and speak an address naturally and it pulls up the navigation immediately.

Steering wheel controls are fine, but using up+down to change tracks took some getting used to. The middle button on the left side doesn't do anything anymore though. I'm not sure if that's the installer's fault or Alpine's.

One tiny complaint would be - because the stock 4runner backup cam isn't great to begin with, it looks pretty terrible on the screen given the unit's disappointing resolution.

Considering how GREAT this unit looks and its massive screen size, I would not make my decision any differently even knowing Apple Carplay and an 8in screen will come standard on the 2020 lineup. We had a rental Sequoia with this setup and it sucked.

10/10 Looks (people ask me all the time if it's stock since it doesn't have that crap aftermarket look)
8/10 Functionality (10/10 in Carplay mode)
x/10 install (didn't do it myself)
10/10 Reliability (unit has never frozen or restarted itself)
7/10 Value (given its still high price compared to models with similar functions)

Thank you for this review. I'll be buying a new 2019 4Runner soon (have had a couple of Tacoma's but this will be the first 4runner..) and wanted to know whether there is any native navigation capability that comes with the system. I think it plugs into the existing GPS antennas that come with the car but do we absolutely have to use our phone to use navigation via carplay or is there something else that is also a possibility?

Only a few reviews on crutchfield for it but many more reviews for the non-4Runner specific model. I looked at these and the difference seems to be a bit more turnkey solution vs more diy assembly and programming, including being able to select certain parts such as Scosche vs Metra dash kit. . . Not sure the large floating display and price level are for me though.
