Upgrade audio using stock radio

Hi all. Considering keeping the stock basic radio in my 2007 4runner SR5 (non JBL) and upgrading the audio. I read thru numerous posts that changing the head unit first was the quickest way to get better sound.

My main concern is theft and I don't want to spend lots of money on a good head unit and worry about someone breaking in and ripping it out of the dash. So my thought was to keep the existing stock head unit and upgrade. Would adding an amplifier help ? Any other suggestions ?

Looking for good quality audio and don't listen to it very loud.

thanks for any suggestions!

you wont really hear much of a difference with speaker upgrade until you match it with a nice headunit, plus the headunit is detachable, its not really easy to rip out the dash, you really have to remove certain panels to do it right. you can try the speaker upgrade, some alpine type s or pioneer, they are good factory replacement speakers, but for more better sound you can add a headunit. otherwise to add amp to stock and have good sound, a processor is needed. audison 8.9 bit is good. amp and proccessor built in.
