Upper Santa Ysabel Trail - Sun 6/9

Last minute run out to Ramona for the Upper Santa Ysabel Trail today when my 14 year old really wanted to get out. I thought about posting a "I'm leaving in 20 minutes" notice here, but decided that really wasn't enough notice--sorry!

We started somewhere around 3 PM, when it was 100 degrees out in Ramona--which is why San Diego's offroad season is in winter!! While we were airing down at the trailhead there was a guy sitting in the shade across the road with his dirtbike, having just finished the trail. He was very happy for the bottle of water that I offered.

The road was interesting, nothing too challenging, but also not "easy"... and I think that I may have gotten some pinstriping... :-(

Near the end there's a creek that crosses the road, a couple parking spots (most of the road was very narrow single track), and some great wading pools. A lady came along with four puppies, which were a big hit with my daughter.

The trail guides aren't too clear on what happens on the far end, but it turns out you don't have to turn back... you can get out to paved roads near Lake Sutherland.

It was a fun little drive! Next time, Lusardi Truck Trail.

Thanks for the trip report! Looks like you guys had fun even though it was hot!

Is Lusardi open now? Last time I went by it was closed (last year). If its open, would you mind if I tagged along? Theres a few trails in that area id like to check out.

The guy on the motorbike said that it was open on the trailhead end, but closed at a gate by private property further in... at a spot where it is challenging to turn around!

So far all we've checked out over by Ramona is Black Mountain Trail and Upper Santa Ysabel Trail, so Lusardi would be new for us as well. I'll see if we can't set on a date and post it. Happy for company!

Also, if you just post when you want to do it in advance, odds are that you'll find some folks who want to come along & likely some of them will know the trail.
