URGH!~This is F'd Up - Car got painted today, well sort of. Advice?

Mission impossible. I noticed as the car dried in the garage tonight that there looks like bits of shiny metal stuck to the finish. In researching this stuff that spilled, its not just paint but as luck would have it, it is a white solvent mixed with fibered aluminum flakes designed to cure to a reflective finish on a roof and insulate the house.... even worse than paint because any attempt to remove those particles is going to be an abrasive situation for the clear coat at the very least to the extent this stuff made it past the fender or splash guards and splatted on the fenders and lower carriage of the rig. I see some spots of that as the car dried in the garage tonight. Fun. I absolutely will need someone with expertise in solvent/paint removal. Don't even know where to start looking for that.

Start by finding out exactly what the stuff is, including brand name. Find out what it's made of. Contact the manufacturer and explain what happened, and request recommendations for removal procedures that are safe for vehicle paints (solvents, tools, etc.). Additionally, ask if it's likely that the product has damaged the clear coat or paint simply via contact/dissolving. THEN, pass this info along to your insurance company, and eventually also to the shop that does the work.

And yes, you need to take lots of pics if you haven't done so already.

This is beyond a detail shop at this point. Research if you want, but I would take it to a body shop or the dealer.

YOU SHOULD NOT DO ANY WORK ON THIS REPAIR!!! YOU WILL GET F'D!!!

This is a Pro specific color and even if a body shop tries, they may not be able to match it. I would not be surprised if the dealer has to order new panels or provide specific paint code info.

Realize your rig is new and you are probably still in the phase where you park it at the end of the lot away from everyone else still.

But to be freaking out because you have white paint in the treads of the tires and under the fender liners? Seriously? I would take those as badges of honor!

White paint on the runner itself and and running boards I get being upset with. That will require a best in class "fix" so to speak. But to claim new tires? for white paint in the tread is ridiculous. At best you will get an "appearance allowance" of maybe $100, not even worth my time to chase down, especially considering it will wear off all by itself the first time you actually take it off road for anything mildly challenging. In my experience, limited as it maybe, it's pretty hard to paint wet rubber that flexes and changes temps several time a day in a spinning rotation.

Keep in mind you said they are owning up to it and willing to pay, but everyone has limits to what they will allow and trying to over compensate and take advantage of them will only make it worse. Actually it could be worse, multiple 5gallons cans bouncing around, lucky you didn't take one to the grill.


Without pics how will we, 5000 of your closest internet best friends actually give you decent advice..........?
This is reminding me of someones worse nightmare because they couldn't install a set of drawers in the back.

FWIW - I completely agree with OP on wanting things fixed, new tires maybe not but at least power washed and if they can not be cleaned up sure or if the solvent/paint is found to dissolve rubber etc.

Now for completely useless advise - don't follow so closely you should have been able to panic stop in time before running through the paint, the 4runner even has a nice assist feature incase you don't apply the brakes fully :biggrin1: and if every other driver has the same common sense you would not get rear ended but we all know how that really ends!

SO I'm driving to work today and a flat bed roofing supply truck in front of me loses its load of multiple 5gallon silver sealant buckets (think white paint). Buckets dumped off the flat bed, smashed on the road and white paint stuff everywhere. No time or room to avoid, drove right through it. 4runner OK, but tread of tires = white, splatted into wheel wells... used to be black but now speckled white), black running boards splatted white spots. Hopefully the body and paint is avoided but can't tell until daylight cause was already getting dark and rainy/windy conditions.

The roofing company is owning the incident and said whatever it takes to fix they are paying for. They gave me some orange cleaner stuff that they say takes off the silver guard stuff but I am worried that anything that can eat asphalt sealant what that might do to my rig. I avoid car washes (wash it myself with care at home only) so didn't want to go that route or let them try to clean it at the roofing company (they also offered to do that). I tired to take of the stuff on the running boards with water and soap but no dice... just smears it like paint would.

ANy thoughts?

Sorry to hear. IanB mentions filing an insurance claim on your policy but I would suggest filing a claim with the roofers insurance company and keep it off your insurance policy/account.

You don't need a hosting service like flickr, etc to upload pictures on this forum.
You can upload pictures directly from your phone.
Under the body of your post you will see beneath the submit reply/preview post buttons a section for additional options:
2nd option down is 'manage attachments' click that and another window will pop up, select pic from your gallery or pic folder and select upload

Roofing companies make a killing and if they are taking shortcuts that's on them. I've seen plenty of trucks not lose paint all over the road - take it to the dealer and get a price for replacement of everything that got colored. Then start there plus some extra for the hassle/girl left you/groceries went bad etc... they will not pay the full amount whatever you ask for by a lot so dont be shy. If you feel guilty you can always cut a check back to them

Offended is not the best way to describe it. I get what people are saying about "the lingo" but when this shit happens to your 5 month old rig the last thing you want to read is "it didn't happen without pics" Thank you for the info about using attachments.

After LONG week of back and forth with manufacturer and Toyota about the use of citrus based cleaner to remove all the spots on the paint and coming to terms with the roofing company, they agreed to pay for the removal which I had detail shop complete with the assistance of hot steam wash of the undercarriage. I would say it is 95% with essentially all the flecks splattered on the doors and fenders removed and anything remaining difficult to see without sticking your head in the wheel wells or under the rig. Not everything came off the running boards and they were dulled in the process of trying to remove it so the company reimbursed me the cost of them and also paid me for a day of missed work in dealing with this crazy situation. To add insult to injury, when stopping by their lot to pick up the reimbursement check I ended up with this bonus rivet in my tire as a surprise from them... like the cherry on top of everything! Here are some pictures... they do not look horrific but keep in mind this stuff is splattered everywhere on my rig and a total PITA to clean off and restore.

Nothing on Carfax - Everything handled between me and roofing company without insurance. They said yes to everything I asked for which was all reasonable and logic based and paid me directly with a company check.

After reading this I’m actually pleased the company stepped up and made the wrong a right. I have seen many situations like this where they don’t even pull over and victims are left to deal with it themselves. I’m sure it was stressful, but glad to see you got it taken care of.

Dont take the check - 95% is not whole plus the extra nonsense. I and my business pay a premium for insurance and ending up 100% is not put of the question. I'm only talking dollars not the hassle. You will see those speckles everytime you walk by. Honestly am not being rude but dont be shy asking for what you deserve, they aren't going to offer out of nowhere. I want to be clear I am not advocating taking advantage of anyone, simply letting INSURANCE provide its product

Edit just saw its cavalry blue - I'd really push for a full fix as the pro exclusive colors are probably their biggest resale advantage. Not talking taste just supply
