USB music storage / Secondary input

Trying to unclutter my dash area of cords. Is there another way to have a USB input on the factory entune system other than the dash mounted plug? I'm asking because my F150 has a USB dash plug but it also has a mini USB behind the dash that you can tap into and run a cable to the glove box or other location to permanently mount an iPod or other storage device.

Has anyone done something like this?

I'd be interested to hear this as well, I have an iPod connected to the USB and tucked in the bottom pocket but have thought about moving the USB plug to the glovebox or somewhere. One option is to use bluetooth instead of USB and tuck the device into the glovebox or center console. Otherwise I'd be interested to see what others have done

I pulled the dash apart and yanked the USB plug socket out of its spot and replaced it with a standard toyota sized switch (for my air compressor), a dummy blank will fit too. My USB now has my iphone cord plugged in and taped together and that cable runs up to my dash to my ram mount, it would be easy to route that to the center console instead and boom, new place for a switch and you are re-routed. You could also just use a USB extension cable instead of the lightning cable and run that to the cubby/glove box and you're set. :banana:

You can take some of the trim off the center stack and move the usb to the glovebox like the 10-13 models had. I did this and took the blank from the glove box and put it in the center stack. Now I have an older ipod with all my music permanently plugged in. its all hidden away in the glovebox. I highly recommend this route.

Definitely will look into this when I tear my dash out next weekend, good thoughts. Maybe I can mount my bass knob there :hatsoff:

I took the easy way out. I have all of my mp3 music on a USB thumb drive that I just leave plugged into the dash USB input.

I've thought about this option, especially since I can get a tiny USB that holds 64 gig for cheap. How are you formatting your music? Can I just dump all of it from iTunes into the thumb drive?

I just used windows explorer to drag over the folders and files onto a similar drive. I thought it needs to be usb 2 drive though.

I have that SanDisk USB 3 drive in the 128 Gb size. Works perfectly with MP3-encoded files. I've tried FLAC but have had no luck with Toyota reading those files.

Bluetooth for the win!

Bluetooth adds additional compression. If you don't care or notice then, yes, that's the cleanest cable free route. Also you are limited to the size of storage on your phone. With a flash drive or ipod that can be less of an issue.

I can't imagine the oem interface being very good for surfing through albums and whatnot, I haven't really tried it though. I prefer the phone on my dash so i can use apple music app and siri to do my bidding. I ran the wire up the dash so its not hanging as I said above, just a thought...

It works fine on my ipod, haven't played with it with other forms of USB media though. I'd be curious how it reads things on a USB flash drive as well

As a Mac user, wondering if this will work myself given the problems I had with programming UHF R/C controllers and stuff like that unsuccessfully in OSX. Don't have my Windows 7 partition to dual boot anymore either. OSX does things with file names that doesn't jive with a lot of stuff that wants Windows formatting despite the file names looking exactly the same in Explorer/Finder. There's always Bluetooth if not...
