Use factory 3.5mm input jack with aftermarket stereo

Hello,

I have been reading these forums a lot lately. There is some really good stuff on here that I have found through google searches about carbon fiber sub boxes and things like that which I am going to attempt really soon. I bought a pioneer avh-3300bt about 1.5 years ago when my old alpine deck was stolen from my car. At that point I just wanted a radio put in and wanted to be done with it. Recently though I have decided I want to clean up things and am sick of seeing the USB hanging in the front. I found a tutorial to mod the cd player to put a USB in the back so that I could then route this to the center console.

I thought I found a forum post where you could still utilize the factory 3.5mm jack. I have a 07 Toyota 4Runner SR5. I was hoping that I could use this jack as well since this cd player doesnt have a rear 3.5mm jack as well. I have an android device which I would like to use for pandora or something like that which is what I would like to use that jack for. Any help would be greatly apprecaited.

So after a little digging around on the inside, I dont think this is possible without an additional mod to my head unit. It looks as if the cables that are connected for the 3.5mm jack run to a separate plug that does not actually plug into my head unit. I guess I will have to do an additional mod to my head unit in order for this to work.

That unit has RCA audio input jacks on the rear. Why don't you get a cable with RCA plugs and use that to connect the factory 3.5mm jack?

Well I do have RCA cables hooked up into the back of the unit, but how can I use that to connect to the factory 3.5mm jack. Would I have to buy an RCA to 3.5mm splitter and then splice it to the factory wires? Just curious what might be the best way to do that.

If you are already using the rear inputs you'd need to get an A/B switch to select between the two sources. If you have two different sources you might be able to use a splitter in reverse to connect them both at the same time if they won't be on at the same time and don't load down the input too much. Otherwise if it's not being used just plug an RCA cable in there and splice the other end to the factory jack.

I am not using the RCA input at the moment. I figured I would just connect the cable in there in case I wanted to do something "dumb" and have a playstation hooked up there on a long drive or something . Anyways, I noticed the factory jack has 4 wires. There is a green, red, blue, and brown, I think. I just recently closed it all back up for the time being so I dont know the exact colors but I think thats what they were. As far as splicing an RCA cable to this, which wires would I connect to which? I assume they arent the exact colors. I have never opened a set of RCA cables before.

On second thought, I am thinking this may not be what I really want to do. As much as I appreciate the idea, I want this to work like the "app mode" for the iphone. I am due for an upgrade on the phone and am considering an iphone which would then let me stream pandora and all of that. I dont think that this would allow me to do that since it wont be the aux input and will now be the AV input.

On a side note, I'm sorry for the delay. I have been trying to do the fiberglass sub box in the back today. It has been A LOT of work, so I am sure hoping that it turns out alright. It took me a few hours just to get everything taped up (and god I hope I got it all so I dont get that resin all over the interior).
