Used 2010 - What to look for?

I'm going to look at a used 2010 SR5 this evening. It has high mileage for the year model (roughly 25K/year) so I want to make sure that the car is in good shape. It has been dealer maintained every 5K miles and the owner says he has documentation showing the maintenance. I'm OK w/a high mileage car that has been maintained b/c I will put very few miles on it...so over the course of a couple of years, it tends to average out.

So what should I look for when buying a 5th generation 4runner? Any common parts or systems that commonly fail? Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I was in the same sort of boat as you (at least in the same sea) a few weeks back. I bought mine through a dealership however so it was a certified pre-owned (almost all the work had been done for me!)..I don't know too much about anything underneath the car or under the hood, but an obvious check would be tire tread. Original tires? If so, that'll bring the price down considerably...also just minor dings and dents always help even out a marginal difference in price between you and the owner :)
 
I have a 2010, bought it when it just came out. Only problem ihad was the thump when i was accelerating from a stopped position. It seemed to be problematic for me when it was from a downhill position, stop lights and parking lots. I would try those places to try to duplicate that "thump" sensation. Almost feels like some rear-ended you at 5mph. The thump was fixed by a TSB and has not returned. I also had squeaky noise whenever i braked, but that noise went away a long time ago. I don.t know if anyone figured out why the noise was there. Other new 2010 4runners had the same noise when i checked at the dealer. I guess it was normal? Thats basically all the problems I had. What are they asking for it? If its a few thousand shy from a new 4runner I would buy new. Good luck!
 
So my wife is the proud owner of a 2010 SR5 w/leather and 3rd row seats (it's a must for us...we have 4 kids). It is the red salsa pearl color and has a little bit of body work that needs to be done to the rear bumper cover. I hope to have that done in the next few weeks as my extremely picky wife doesn't like the scrapes on her "new" car.

I'll be lurking and asking questions on the forum soon...glad to have joined the T4R club.

Wahoo! :thumb3: Just bought my first 4R a month or so back...don't think I'll be buying anything else (for myself at least) from here on out! Love it. :guitar3:
 
Sounds like your rig may be over 36k miles and thus out of warranty. If not you can buy the Toyota Platinum warranty out to 100k miles on the cheap. Search on this board and you will find the guys contact info - all legit. $1400 bucks or so IIRC.
 
One of the good things about this used 4runner was that the original owner had bought the Toyota Maintenance plan up to 95K miles. I'm not sure of the monetary value that adds but I figure that I don't have to worry about oil changes and major services until after the 95K miles at least. Any idea how much that costs?

I just bought a 2010, and didn't so much look over the body work as I was concerned with the service records and carfax. I felt a bit weird like you buying a first year model run, 4 damn years after it came out.

oh well, here we are right. You will freggin love it... like me.

Pretty good report when long time owners can just come up with drive shaft thump and cloudy headlights. I had both on my SR5 (the headlights were very minor but had replaced under warranty) the the DS just yoke just needed to be greased.

Otherwise the 5th gen has proven to be quite reliable, and that's why I've owned 2 of them.

Congrats on the new purchases. And the powertrain warranty is good until 60k, so that's the important one.
 
Well the biggest factor in buying the 4runner was for the wife to be happy...because if momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy!!

But it was still important to me that the car we bought was cool and dependable...because I will most likely get the wife's car as a hand-me-down in a few years.

Any idea how much the ToyotaCare Plus package (free oil changes and multipoint inspections/etc) up to 95K miles is "worth?" I was just curious if us getting that transferred to us was as good of a deal as I thought it was when I purchased it. Thanks.
