Thanks Troopa,... I see some good options on eBay and just msg'd a couple of the listings for details. Know of any other places local to DC?
Also, I hadn't thought about doing it myself (seems daunting). Right now, the car is sitting at the repair shop waiting for additional diagnostics... could be a blown head gasket or cracked engine block.
Have you installed this kind of engine before? I honestly wouldn't know what to do, nor do I have any tools to make it happen.
Thoughts/suggestions?

Anytime... I have not done the 3.4 per say but I have put in an engine for a 98 land rover discovery. I have tools but I had to borrow an engine crane to do the swap. I will keep my eye out for any craigslist ads for wrecked 4runners also you may try some junk yards. They might have an engine. In regards to doing the replacement if it's in the shop already just let them do it. I have been looking for t4r people in the NOVA area so we could plan some trips, help each other out in regards to working on our trucks etc. If you are interested let me know and send me your email address. Hope things work out for ya. If you don't mind me asking but what happened to the truck?? How many miles do you have on it??

Ha nevermind I just saw your prior post. Based on the tan cream you saw I believe it is the head gasket as well. Keep us posted on what the shop says... I will be on the search for an engine.

Yeah, my previous post sums it all up. I was pretty sad about this actually... first any major problem on this baby ever. But I would be happy about a used engine replacement that now I see it's not as expensive as I had initially thought.
It's been at the shop (Katzman Auto) for a several days now.. these guys are really good folks, personable and I'm leaning towards having them do the work (since I don't have much time to spare, plus to ensure warranty). But the shop guys recommended a used engine replacement... would be cheaper than taking the old one out, tearing it apart, diagnosing the issue, repair, and rebuild, and re-install.
I've come across a 57K mi engine for $2300, it needs an oil pan and timing cover (both which I hope can be taken from my current engine). This includes a 6 mo warranty, or a 1 yr warranty for $200 more. Thoughts?
I'm curious what prices sound reasonable for engines at 75K, 100K, 125K or $140 miles?
And I've been given a general estimate of 18-20 hrs to remove, prepare the used engine (taking parts from my current engine for the replacement engine if better condition), and install (with shop parts, fluids). This cost is about $1700-$2k. Does this sound about right?

I am doing the math with the 57k engine and honestly I don't think it would be a good idea to do it.
Engine = 2300
Labor = 2000 -> which seems about right in the NOVA area
Misc = 600 -> might as well do the timing belt and waterpump while everything is out
Total = 4900
If you want this truck to last 2 more years then for 4900 I would just buy another one.
Try to find a cheaper one the link that viking sent you is a good deal.

Just a thought.... If troopa is offering to help you may able to do the job for under 2k plus you learn a lot about wrenching for the future.. new engine + experience = $2k Sounds like a good deal.

doh! Well, I certainly appreciate the offer Troopa... I really do (it's a very nice offer and not many ppl would do that). Unfortunately, I'm on a major time crunch (have no other car to get to work... luckily my boss is very flexible) and don't have much open time until early march (work travels and a 13 mo. boy at home). Otherwise, I'd ask at least one of my other friend's help who has done this before. But another factor to this is I have no car repair experience (and that's because the 4Runner has been flawless til now). I barely have any tools and definitely don't have a crane... thus I find it very daunting (though I'm sure others are more rightfully confident in their abilities). To top it off, I already told the shop I'd let them do it and because of that, they won't be charging me for all the diagnostics they've already done, and they've helped me save $120 on towing from another Co).
But I figure I can get the engine by early next week and Katzman Auto thinks they can complete the work by the end of the week. Maybe I can ask them to come down on the labor or that all labor (including replacing the waterpump, timing belt, spark plugs, etc. with me purchasing new ones elsewhere) for no more than $2k. Maybe I can negotiate with some place for a 100-105K mile engine down to around $1100? Then hopefully my cost would be about $3100-$3300.
If it works out well, I think I can keep it around as a winter/utility vehicle and get another day-to-day driving car (my wife already wants a mini-Van.. ugh!). Or sell it after 1.5 yrs for $5K (based on KBB)... this would pay off the upcoming costs and I'd get more than if I were unload it as-is right now (probably no more than $1K).
Thoughts?

Try Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market for a searchable database of junk yards. If you find a promising motor ask the yard for the name of a shop that installs them.
I just checked and used engines run about $800-$1200 in the Richmond area.

Update: Am getting the 4Runner back today... had the older 258K mi engine replaced with a 101K mi engine for $1100. The warranty was the best I could find... if there's a problem within 2 months, they're replace it with another or give me my money back. Other warranties include free parts but some-none labor support.
The labor to fix everything was $2100 (includes synthetic oil, coolant, misc parts, hoses, harnesses)...
Generally, my thought process was that:
1) I'm hesitant in rushing to buy a car out of desperation (would rather spend my time making the best decision)
2) If I sell the 4Runner as is (broken engine), I'd get less than $800 probably
3) If I repair it decently for no more than $3500, then I could drive it around for another year while looking for something else and still be able to sell it for the repair cost or more (would save a year of cost against a new car).
So, I'll drive it around a few days and see how it pans out, comparing it to the old feel/sound/performance.
