Used tire resale value (3rd gen) question ...

So I'm really thinking of moving up to 33s in tire size but it will be years before my tires wear out. Now that I have a hybrid DD I'm not too concerned about the small drop in MPG from 33s.

I guess in order to make this work I would just buy new tires and sell my old ones on CL.


Do you guys think I will have any luck with that?

I would only hope to get $.50 / $1.00 for them compared to new. Basically that is about $80-$90 per tire.

These are 265x75x16 (larger stock size) and they all have over 2/3, more like 3/4 Tread left (no BS).

The other catch is I have 2 BFA T/A and 2 General Grabber AT2 (another story).

Around here, if its a stock size tire, its worth around 200 for a matching set of 4, regardless of tread %, it's kind of odd honestly.
 
I just sold a set of 4 Yokohama Geolander HT/S. 265/70/16 with about 7/32 left and a little dry rot. Got $250 and they were only on Craigslist for about 3 hours.

In your case, I'd sell them in pairs. List them for $200/pair and make a note you have two others available in each ad. Maybe offer a deal at $350 for all 4.

I live inthe middle of nowhere and very easily sold a set of tires on Craigslist. Some bfg rugged trails. Anyway. You live in a very populace area. Theyve got good tread. Thryre one of the most popular sizes. And they are all terrains... I dont see you having any trouble selling them.
 
while PitbullRescuer advice is good and is a general rule of thumb, id personally just watch craiglist for a while like a month or so... just watching tires and how much they go for, how long they stay posted ect... that will tell you how much you can get for them, guys who have their tires priced too high wont sell them, guys who have them too low will see them go in very little time, honestly i think in PBRs case he had his tires too low... if they were gone in 3 hrs im sure he could of got another $50 easily for them... now the flip side of that is, if you have them too high you could lose a buyer, so thats why i said watch CL for a little while see what sells and what doesnt and price accordingly.
 
I would ask $300 for a matching set. In your case probably $100 a pair or $200 for the set. I'm struggling to sell my 35's (matching BFG's) for $400 and will likely have to lower the price.
 
I think $300-$400 would be reasonable as long as they are in good shape and as much tread as you mentioned. Being in SoCal you'll probably have a good amount of people interested.

Might want to consider splitting them up. I don't know which stock wheels you have but the cost of shipping wheels is not bad at all if you go with parcel post at the USPS. It would open you up to a much more broad range of buyers. Most people wont pay shipping for used tires unless the deal on the tires makes up for the huge shipping costs but by removing the wheels you just made your tires more sellable to the guy with the nissan, ford, dodge down the street.

Edit*** I just saw your ad and those wheels are desirable. Walmart sells an 18x18x18 box to make shipping easier. Shipping 2 wheels per box comes out cheaper than a single and it does not exceed the USPS weight limit. Just put a cardboard divider between the 2 wheels so there is little to no metal on metal contact.

I did not want to consider shipping because the weight of wheels and tires has to be quite high, which equals high shipping cost.

I did not know about wal-mart selling wheel boxes. I might swing by the local Discount Tire and see if they have any boxes they are going to get rid of.

If I don't sell in the next couple of days, I will split them up.

Yeah finding wheel boxes would be ideal but I never can where I live. You can ship those wheels for about $70 total to most anywhere in the US doing what I suggested. I have paid way too much for shipping in the past not specifying parcel post so make sure you say that when shipping.
 
It took me over a month to sell my stock tires on CL, but they are a common size on some fords as well, so just hold out and you will sell them ( assuming they are a good brand and are in good shape)
 
In the DC/VA metro area it is much more dependent on the type of tire being offered.

I cannot recall how many "hot" sets of tires end up on CL here. Some idiot had the stones to sell tires and rims he stole from dealership cars.
