Using Nav While In Motion

Yesterday, I was trying to program a destination on the nav while moving and all of the buttons were blacked out. It wouldn't let me type in my destination or adjust anything with the nav. The system was not locked out because I could control the audio. Also, I was not even the driver. First, is this normal for the navigation system? If it is, how do you make it so you could program a destination while in motion?

If you can't (or don't want to) modify the nav system to work while in motion, you always have the option of preselecting your destinations and saving them on your quick access buttons.

These buttons are always active even when moving. In fact, you should use the button with the "home" icon on it to bring you home. This way you can be anywhere and just touch the button to get home, even while driving.

Thanks for the tips everyone. You would think Toyota would put in some sort of sensor to unlock the nav when someone is in the passenger seat. I wonder if Lexus programs their nav's the same way.

here ya go... http://www.siennaclub.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=2379 there's several good threads there on the siennaclub forum about the nav stuff. it's a bit of reading, but it describes the whole reasoning/etc...

(BTW- nice new 4r...saw the other thread, just didn't post! so who gets it? your mom or dad?)

For the winter, my dad will be taking it to work. He needs something that will get him through any type of weather. They really don't have set cars so whoever wants gets it!!

I did this mod. It was fairly easy and makes entering destinations for my "passenger" much quicker. I couldn't imagine waiting for a red light or pulling to the side of the road to enter a new destination.

I recently took the 4runner from NJ to Disney. The 4runner (and navigation) was great. Key feature to the Nav was driving at night and finding a hotel 30 mins down the road. Much easier with the Nav in Motion Mod.

Lojeff,
Did you take the HU out of the dash and do the wiring there? Isn't the 4Runner nav system only in the HU (no separate unit under the seat)? Are the connectors/wires the same as in the sSienna because I'd like to do the mod on my 4Runner with factory nav.

I know this is an old thread- but didn't want to open a new one since this is the topic-

Finally got the nav installed this past weekend on my runner- thanks to everyone who helped. Now of course I want to make it so I can adjust the destination while moving.

Does anyone know if the mod that coastal-tech is offering on the prius nav will work on a solara unit?

The pin adapters look fairly similar from what I remember and I'm just wondering if this is a viable solution.

Thanks
Sno
