Uwharrie OHV 2016 Meet Up Thread

For those of you that are interested in going to Uwharrie National Forest OHV Trails this year, well use this thread to plan/organize meetups.

Uwharrie is located in lower middle North Carolina for those not aware of it.

Uwharrie opens up the 1st of April 2016.

The first weekend of April is also the Uwharrie Jamboree... Main

I know a few of us are planning on going and meeting up for a meet and greet. The local FJ group I hang out with has a few going as well as the local 4Runner group.

If you plan on going to Uwharrie this year and want someone to wheel/hangout with, post on here and I'm sure someone will be going also. (We go almost every weekend to wheel/camp)

Bought my year pass for 2016 back before they closed for winter. Ready for them to open up, but will definitely be skipping opening day! Freaking nuts around that time lol
 
Count me in. I have only been once before but had a blast.

Also, I plan to use the long distance rifle range next time I go if anyone else also likes to shoot.

What is opening week like? I imagine it looks like a ski lift line of trucks.

Of course we like to shoot. :D

I'm skipping opening day/week for sure though.
 
I've yet to go, but I plan on Uwharrie being my go-to spot quite often this season. I need some different scenery than my usual haunts in the GWNF, plus I'm closer to central NC now anyways.
 
I'm going to go ahead and step out of the shadows for a minute. I've been wanting to get into some wheeling but I have zero real experience. Are there any good novice trails in URE where my stock SR5 with terra grapplers would hold up? I've been thinking about getting 5100s and KO2s but that may be a lot farther out than closer. I Really want to learn to use my truck for more than just hauling people and getting mountain bikes to the trailhead.

I ride URE on my mountain bike all the time but I've never been to the vehicle trails. Only the mountain bike trails.

I went to Uwharrie soon after getting my Trail in January and just rode around on the gravel roads getting a feel for things. There are a few spots that 4WD was helpful, and that helped me get a feel for a few things with the truck. See my Avatar picture, it was from that same day.

I haven't actually been on any of the 4WD trails yet, but my understanding is that there are a few that are fine for stock vehicles.

If you have time, there's a "4wd-101" class on March 26th at the Uwharrie Off Road Training Center across the highway from the Uwharrie trails. I'm taking it and I think one other person here said they were also. Reviews are excellent, I'm really looking forward to it. That class would probably be your best introduction into off roading.
 
I'm going to keep tabs on this thread. I used to go to Uwharrie a lot back in the late 90's. Haven't been there since but might be interested in a trip up. I never had any issues with my LC, but I know my 4Runner wouldn't be able to tackle as much.
 
I cant wait for Uwharrie to open. Ive been the past 3 years and cant wait for 2016. Havent personal done much of my own wheeling but have been on plenty of wheeling trips.

There are a few trails you would do fine with your set up, I would recommend Uwharrie Offroad Training Center(UROTC), it would cover a lot of the basics for you. The other thing you could do is just go down and ride with another member, it will give you a good idea of the terrain and what to expect.

opening weekend isn't as bad as you would think. now its not pleasant by any means, but its not bad. opening weekend is also the jamboree which is fun to go to and walk around and see what's to offer.

when my 4Runner was stock and only a few hundred miles on it we took it to uwharrie. wolfs den and falls dam are easy trails. buddy of mine took his stock trail up the back side of Daniel no problems. if you want to meet up one weekend when were down there, id be happy to show you around. you can follow me down the easy ones, then when you get to the point that you want to stop wheeling your you can hope in with me.

This goes for everyone by the way...
I don't do some of the trails in the 4Runner though, all of them that start with a "D" I tend to not do, with the exception of the back side of Daniel.

I know a few people that have taken the course and have said great things about it.

I wish I had rode with someone my first time going. I just showed up in a lifted tundra double cab and started hitting the trails haha. folded back the mirrors many times on both sides on tree trunks. the tundra was a wide girl for uwharrie!

I just might do that. $250 is a nice little chunk of change but a damaged rig can be a lot more! I'd rather pay someone to teach me the thing I need to know and feel like I have a clue.

To be fair, I have done some light offroading. I'm a land surveyor and I used to do a lot of work for Duke Energy and Progress Energy. I would often times drive the work trucks down power line right-of-ways and get into hairy situations. I never felt comfortable and safe. Hopefully some good instruction can help.

I have also heard people taking stock runners up the easy stuff there no problem. In fact, I have seen some on the trails. Though,
REMOVING RUNNING RAILS IS A MUST. It takes 10 minutes and its the best mod for wheeling. Also, simple things like deflating tires properly goes a long way.

The difficulty rating of terrain is similar to the ski slopes. Pic related

Just replaced my rear brake/rotors and threw braided lines & speed bleeders in all the way around while I was down there.


Looking forward to meeting yall locals and learn all the secret spots
