V-6 MPG Post up!

I believe the final gear ratio is the same for both the 4 spd and the 5 spd, so at highway speed there should be no transmission gain or loss between them.

the 5 speed should be 5% higher in top gear than the 4 spd, i.e. running at 5% less RPM for the same speed. anybody have the final drive on the 05 V6 5spd runners? i have the ratios for the v8 and v6 03, but not the latest info

I have been driving around like a grandma this entire tank, I hope to fill up tomorrow, I have just under a quarter tank left and I think I have drive about 300 miles.. so far so good. Maybe I just have a lead foot.

20 mpg here always (mixed driving). Interesting observation though: lack of fifth gear means drop in gas milage at speeds over 75 mph, bomer...

Yea, that was something I saw in the first 2000 miles... Not having that 5th gear makes things a little bit more driver-involved and not as good as 75 mph.

I have also noted during city driving that keeping the RPM's around 1500 increases MPG (which means I manage the shift between 3rd and drive most of the time).

Best gas mileage - 300 mile round trip, averaging about 70 mph, no rain or snow in 2WD on 91 Octane... 26.5 MPG.

Worst gas mileage - 100 mile round trip, towing 20' bowrider & trailer (about 4800 lbs). ... 12 MPG.

If I am calculating the final drive ratios correctly, the V6 would have a final drive ratio of 10.961:1 in first gear where the V8 has 13.119:1 (stump pulling power). Top speed final drive ratios for V6 and V8 are as follows: 2.756:1 V6 and 2.668:1 V8.

Bulldog - I haven't seen anything that the ratio's have changed.

why is it that some people get 24mpg and others (like me) get around 16.5?

I realize that the way you drive as well as the speeds (roads) you are driving on make a difference, but 7.5 mpg difference?!

This is a common topic on Xterra boards as well as it is thought ot have terrible gas mileage. My supercharged model gets 15 mpg average and is rated 14c/19h. I do NOT drive like grandma. Once I managed to keep the RPMS under 2500 for most of a tank of gas and managed to squeeze 17.5mpg for that tank.

The X is not aerodynamic, its basically a brick on wheels. I'ms somewhat surprised at the poor gas mileage you v6'rs are getting here and I'm feeling better about my xTerra now.

Another thing to consider for most of you besides the tires comment is your elevation and cold weather gasoline being used by some of you that could account for the differences being talked about here. No doubt if some of you are still warming up your motors that is having an impact also.

I checked my MPG today, 17.3 MPG, now I drove 50/50 highway and city, I putted around like a grandma, I drove 60 on the highway and tried to keep it below 2000 rpms in the city... I think im going to start playing with tire pressure on this next tank... Im hoping to get around 19-20 on average...

Mine only has about 1200 miles on it. I drive about 85% city and I average about 19MPG. I have been using regular unleaded, so I might try using a higher octane in the next tank to see what that does.

I'm getting between 21 and 24. I commute 54 miles both ways with a rather large mountain in between. Commute involves Rt 53 (55 mph usually), I-64 (from Charlottesville to Staunton and back) and then all the way through the small city of Staunton. I don't punch the gas and I stay at or just below 69 mph on the interstate.
I also use the cheapest gas I can find although I do use Mobile I oil and filter and change every 5K. I rotate the tires (all 5) at every OCI. I have 21,000 + miles and maintain an air pressure of 35 psi all the way around - it just feels better.

I suspect the lower numbers of others is directly related to a heavy foot and trying to maintain a higher speed on the highways. The 4Runner's profile does not lend itself to cutting through the wind!

my 88 4runner with a 22re gets about that!

but i do know that my dads '95 runner with a v-6 that i drive/work on all the time gets about 18-22 mpg on the highway.
are you running all stock engine/exhaust on yours? becuase i put a k&n filter, larger exhaust and a few other cheap little things to help boost his mpg. i did this when he first got it though and i dont think that we ever tested his mpg before the add ons so im not sure how much we actual gained.

I've been getting between 22 and 23 mpg. I've only used premium so far. I've been babying it a bit since it's only about 1.5 months old. I do like the larger tank in the 4th gen truck. I get 400 miles between fills and I only got 300 on my '01 SR5.

I get 21-22MPG on an '05 with 4k miles. It's gone up from a low of 19 as things loosen up.

Oh, and I always use premium octane fuel - 91 octane or higher. Did the same in my 93 4Runner and noticed mileage drops when I ran an occassional tankful of regular.

My last 2 tanks have been 20MPG exactly.
40 psi in the dunlops, 93 octane Shell gas,
55-65 MPH on the highway, cruise ON and Drivin like a grandma everywhere else.

I am going on a 1000 mile road trip soon, I will post up road trip mileage then, hope to see 23-25 MPG on the trip.

2005 SE, 1700 miles,driving is about 65% highway,not more than 75mph,pretty easy on pedal....18.6 off the computer, I run only regular .Only use 4w in bad weather. I just added some Lucas upper cylinder lube to tank of gas looking to improve milage. Was told its very good stuff so I thought it wouldn't hurt to try. Not seeing any difference so far.

You will get better milage naturally as your car breaks in.

You don't need to add a lubricant, I guess it can't hurt.

That was based on actual gas used. The computer was showing 25.2
