V-6 MPG Post up

Hey everyone,

I have been really impressed by my overall gas milage in the 4runner...sooo much better than my detroit gas guzzling Ford! I have been avg. 19.1 since August . I drive mostly suburban roads, and up to Vermont a couple of times, but very happy with the overall results. Now that the prices are rising again, I'm thrilled to be in such a quality ride!!

Happy St. Patty's Day...

Today is the 1st anniversary of taking delivery so here are my numbers:
33,300 Km / ~20,690 miles
4535.5 Litres / 998 Imperial gallons / 1198 USgal
Average = 7.295 Km/Litre / 20.6 MPImpGal / 17.2 MPG
Lowest = 14.6 MPImpGal / 12.2 MPG
Highest = 26.75 MPImpGal / 22.3 MPG
Average speed of 30.6 mph based on 677 running hours (50/50 mix of city/highway.)

I just got back from taking a 800 mile trip on my 4 day old 4wd. Got 23 mpg, not bad since i just barely broke 1000 miles on the odometer.

How fast did you drive when you were getting 23MPG?
Im assuming this trip was mostly highway right?

Varying between 60-70 as i was still "breaking-in" the engine. Yes, it was almost all highway driving.

On my 900 mile road trip(one way) I got some disapointing MPG!

19.75 average. I will blame some of the bad mileage on the mountians in west virgina and also the heavy rains. It rained almost the entire trip. At times I was only going 50 MPH for fear of hydroplaning. The runner was loaded up pretty high in the back with all the crap you drag along on a family road trip. I was running 38 PSI in the dunlops the entire trip. I ran Chevron and SHell 87 octane the whole way. I was hoping to see around 23-24 MPG. I was driving 65-75 through out the whole trip. I am starting the drive home tommorow and I plan to improve the mileage some. I am running 38 PSI as before but I think I will plan to run 65 with the cruise on all the way back. I will post up when I get back home...

btw i cost me 47 bucks to fill the ole girl up today! I dont regret buying the 6 cylinder at all!!!

Highway or not, mileage is deffinately better between 50 and 65 mph

My return trip was much better. My first tank was 22mpg. I had the cruise on 63, at times I had to slow down to 55 for work zones and slower cars etc. I only got 18.5 MPG in the mountains but I put the cruise on 75 and it was downshifting alot to get up the hills. Overall I cannot complain about a 19-20 mpg average.

Is it unsual to get 16 MPG on the HIGHWAY going 75 - 90 MPH?

Is our ideal 21-22 MPG, really estimated at 60 - 65 MPH?

What kind of highway driving do these people do when test highway milage?

at 16kmi, i'm getting ave. 23.4 on the comp, and 21.6 actual. This is mixed driving with 80/20 hwy/city. I'm light footed.
Still not great, and everyday i think about getting rid of the 4r. I love the truck, but i rarely use it for its intended purpose.

How long do you guys warm up your car? I noticed that mpg will vary a lot with warm up time.

I always get 17MPH no matter what i do.

2004 4X2 V6 SR5. Mostly highway miles.

Well since I have slowed down some, run at least 40 psi in the dunlops, I am now averageing at least 19.5 -21.5 mpg. I use the cruise alot too. I rarely drive over 70mph now. Just good to know that decent gas mileage is possible if you slow down and use the cruise control!

I warm up mine about 15-30secs.
The oil filter on these are at the top, and are antidrain, so at least the supply of oil is already there as well as the engine doesn't need to spend time filling the filter like on the olden day cars.

I have a '03 V8 Sport and get ~17mpg with mostly around-town driving. I've gotten around 19mpg with more highway, and the lowest I've seen is 16.5mpg when doing a LOT of city driving while driving like a maniac (hard accelerations, etc).

Sounds to me like a lot of you with V6's are actually getting the same mileage, if not worse than my V8.

Most likely it's because the V6 is working harder to do the same job the V8 is doing.

My average for mixed driving is calculated 19.2 (at 5k miles). My best hi-way milage is over 24 mpg at 72 mph with AC and 4 adults and gear (again this is calculated - not the useless trip computer). Worst milage was about 15 mpg towing my boat and trailer (about 4500 lbs) with 4 adults and gear. And no, I don't take 10 minutes to get to 70. I take less than 10 seconds.

I agree. While the EPA is only a couple of mpg different, it seems like quite a few V6 owners are getting more than 2 mpg better, especially on the hwy. There are V8 owners averaging 14-15 mpg, and V6 owners averaging 18-19 mpg. Additonally, there are no V8 owners getting 24 mpg in hwy driving.

Of course if Toyota made a V10 diesel 4Runner, those owners would tell the V8 owners that they were "kidding themselves" that their little V8 could safely tow a jet-ski :

As gas prices climb, some V8 owners might be "kidding themselves" that they really need a V8 .......others will just trade in for a V6 or a future diesel powered 4Runner

(Everyone just get the engine you want. If you feel the need to justify the choice to yourself, don't do it by putting down the other engine...justify it by enjoying the one you have.)

I think both engines are great (they're both made by Toyota!)

Ask the 4WD V-8 guys what mileage they are getting.

Your runner is 2wd right? THat eliminates alot of weight and rolling resistance right there. Just something to consider

Of course if Toyota made a V10 diesel 4Runner, those owners would tell the V8 owners that they were "kidding themselves" that their little V8 could safely tow a jet-ski :

Sorry for stirring the pot here, guys... I didn't intend to cause such an uproar. It just seems to me that the additional smoothness provided by the V8 and the ABILITY to have a higher towing capacity does not offset the 1-2mpg difference that it appears most people are getting (assuming like configurations, 2WD vs. 4WD)... Especially when I see people with V6's getting 16-18mph, which is exactly what I get IN-TOWN in my V8 (and I am NOT easy on the throttle at all), it just doesn't make sense to get the V6; to me anyways. Once I get mine on 100% highway driving at the end of this month, I'll come back to see report what my highest (calculated) mileage is on my ~5700 mile round trip from San Antonio, TX to Vancouver, Canada.
