(V6 4X4 or V8 4X2) What would you do...?

I have test driven a V6 twice and let me tell you that is a nice engine. The only thing you might start thinking down the road is, "This is such a great engine, what must the V8 be like?".
That's why I went ahead with the V8.
But I agree with everyone else here that the V6 4x4 would be much better than a V8 4x2.

If resale value was in any way a concern, then I'd choose the V6 4 x 4. The V8 choice has two things against it for resale: 1) 4 x 2 SUV's don't sell as quickly in most areas 2) Due to gasoline prices, more and more used SUV purhasers are looking for a V6.

That's a good point, especially considering the fact that the 4Runner V6 is no slouch!

If you don't need to surpass the 5,000lb tow rating of the V6, I would go with the V6 4x4. Sure you are from AZ, but you never know when you might need (or just want) the 4x4 for whatever purpose or trouble you get yourself into.

The V6 is actually a very potent SUV, and I would've never ordered a model with the V8 (since I don't tow much) if I hadn't gotten a deal on a certified pre-owned.

But, in the end, everyone has different needs for the vehicle, and I'm sure you will be happy with whatever model you decide to go with.

V8 is just so much smoother and effortless than V6.

I think the original post was due to the price difference, a V6 4x4 is almost the same price as the V8 4x2.

That's why I went with the V8 4x4, best of both worlds.

V6 4x4. I live in northern canada and need the 4x4 for snow (skiing we like to do) and i haul my 4ooolb boat around a bit.

V8 don;t need it. Cheaper on insurance and gas.

The only option is the V6 4x4! Take it from someone who has had a 4Runner 4x2, dont get me wrong with a good set of tires the 4X2 will go just about anywhere you want within reason. The 4WD will come in handy more time than you would thing.

I like how I couldn't spell in my last post. A 4x2 is just a 2 wheel drive in this case a rear wheel drive.

I know he already made a decision. Just thought I would throw in my .02 I bought a V8 4wd this Summer to tow a boat. I also do a lot of Winter driving in snow country due to skiiing and hockey. But I really noticed something durring a downpour this Summer.

Other cars were pulling off the road due to the rain and I was still on cruz at 70+. It was on rails! Maybe the 2wd would have been the same, but I was truely impressed. I finally slowed down only because I was afraid some jamoke ahead of me might be going 30 without tailights. Would have been a good brakecheck!

Yeah I bought the 4x2 and definitely regret it... I love the car, don't get me wrong, but if I could do it again, it woulda been at least a V6 4x4 if not a V8 4x4.... Oh and about that "Can I change it to 4x4?" post - I'm sure he would consider it if it wouldn't screw over his warranty... I know I would.

-the gas savings can be made up by having 1 less sbux drink a day

Loving the V8

All I can offer on the subject is that I am plenty satisfied with my V8 4x4. That's a damn fine engine that has clearly been tested and refined.

I live in TN and I bought a 4x2. We don't get too much snow down here and I use mine to haul things and I have taken it off road a couple of times and it did great. I also drive about 40 miles one way to work so with the V6 I save a little on gas and get better gas mileage. Going from an Acura TSX to a 4runner was one of the best decisions I have made even though I did not get a V8 4x4 but if I get more into the off road scene I will look at getting a 4x4.

the v8 in my limited is awesome. i'm amazed by how smooth and torquey it is. such a value car.

Its all about towing. If you don't need the additional tow limit, I would go for the V6 and save a little on the note and a little at the pump.

I needed the tow rating, so I have an 07 Limited AWD V8. I love the vehicle, but it is NOT much on mpg's.

Figure out what you are going to use it for and then make your decision.

Have you ever actually driven a 4th generation 4Runner with a V6 engine? FYI, the level of power compares with the 4.7L V8 engine in Jeeps (Commander, Grand Cherokee, etc.) and will actually outperform them on the road. The V6 4Runner engine has no problems whatsoever moving the weight of the 4Runner, even long uphill driving.

Did you know that the early 4th generation 4Runners (2003 and 2004) had more HP with a V6 engine than the V8 engine? Two otherwise identical 4Runners would accelerate neck-and-neck with either engine. That in itself proves that the V6 4Runner is no dog.

You should be happy with your V8 and stop talking so much crap about the V6. It makes you seem insecure.
