I was starting to compile a list of parts/tools/seals, for when I get brave enough to do this repair. Mine is still slowly eating antifreeze.
I am 7 miles out of town and don't have a spare car running at the moment.
Wanted to get everything needed in advance.

Also should say that 04112-31720 would probably be the way to go, just get the other side HG. On the cheap. And any other parts...water pump, thermostat.
Looks like the 'Engine Overhaul Gasket Kit' can be anything from seals to a full rebuild, pistons and crank parts. Can get expensive.
I screwed up and started just buying random seals that I thought I would need over the last 6 months or so...RockAuto sales.:heh:

Rough idle, waterfall sound, no overheating at all. Low on coolant.
Threw code P0306 at 210,000 miles showing misfire on cylinder #4 and #6
Just got off the phone with Toyota to have it documented.
Sad face. The FJ62 still runs like a champ. Direct quote from my mechanic “it ain’t like the land cruiser”.
Will likely suck it up and get it fixed and keep on moving.

2006 4Runner 4.0l with a build date of 10/05. Head gasket is blown at 326000 miles. It’s been showing symptoms for a few thousand miles. Drives well other than a rough start once in a while and burning a gallon of coolant every 7 months or so. Is it worth fixing or should I simply drive it till it really dies?

I'm not sure if I'm experiencing the very first signs of possible head gasket failure bu tthis morning I went to start my truck and it stuttered very briefly when cranking. Almost like it was missing.
It eventually started and smoothed out (after ~ 3 seconds of trying to start up).
After this I drove it down the block to a Speedway and when I tried to restart again, the engine didn't fire right up. Wasn't as bad as the cold start mentioned above, but not like it normally should start up with just a blip of the key.
I posted way back on this thread about superseding part numbers for the head gaskets between years 05 and 06.
Build date is 11/05 I believe (at work).
I'm going to monitor this and put a code scanner on it tomorrow but If this is the first signs of a possible head gasket failure, I need to get it into the dealer soon as the extended warranty runs out at ~162,000 miles and the extended warranty should cover it!
I'll post an update of the code scan read (might not give any codes as it isn't throwing a check engine light).

Started the truck last night after work and it started up without issues and strong as ever. Sat in the lot for about 11 hours.
Going to keep monitoring this. Coolant levels are perfect. I checked them yesterday and radiator is full and overflow is normal. Havent seen either one move.
Ill post back if I can get a code out of her on my scanner.

This thread is making me really nervous to buy a 4th Gen to replace my totaled 3rd Gen.
Unfortunately I can't afford anything post 2005 really, so I'm looking at a lot of 2003-5 V8s. I'm wondering what I can do when checking cars out to avoid buying into a HG failure. Can I buy an OBD code reader to scan codes for the cylinder misfires at the very least? Check for white smoke from the exhaust and a sweeter smell/not oil smell, right? Short of those two things it would be a matter of getting it bore scoped by a mechanic, but even then there's no guarantee that it won't just happen to me a some point down the road.

The head gasket isn’t a problem on the V8’s. All you have to watch out for on the V8 is the water pump and timing belt.
As far as a recall goes, the odds are very slim as it’s been so long and so many complaints already.

Oh right! Totally missed that it's less common on the V8s. I guess one more reason to get the V8 then. Sorry you guys are getting hosed by Yota though. That's pretty lame considering the diehard devotion and such.

New to the group and I, too, have been the victim of this problem. I was thinking it was radiator leak due to losing coolant and side of radiator was "wet". More and more reading and researching and having pretty much the same symptoms.

took to a mechanic and I told him that its NOT the coil as I've already switched them around and changed plugs too. I've also told him the symptoms and possibility of the HG being bad and I asked him to do some pressure testing and such ... he came back to me and said, it's not my HG but it was the coil - and he was adamant that he's right... so I took the car back...
with that said, any San Diegans who can refer me to a mechanic that knows the problem on these trucks and has done the job?

He did my head gasket and did a great job. He's also done two friends' head gaskets.

I had my HG replaced a few years ago around the same mileage. A couple of months ago i had the same symptom come back as described by your email (now at 195k miles). Scared me that my 'newer' HG is failing again.
Turns out it was one of the coil so you might want to try that first. Doesn't hurt to get another professional opinion.

Good call. He can diagnose it pretty easily. With mine, the coolant stunk of fuel which is a definitive symptom. This was in addition to all of the other symptoms except I never had a CEL.

Long time lurker here. Had my 05 since 42000 miles. At 187000 got symptoms of head gasket failure. Brought to local Toyota dealer. First trip, new plugs and coil. Nope. Second time new fuel injector and nice Bullshit session with service manager. 3rd trip they finally stuck a scope in cylinder 4 and found coolant. They replaced both head gaskets and necessary items for $3000. What chaps my ass is I asked them trip one to check head gasket as coolant was low and symptoms pointed in that direction. Crossing my fingers everything went back together correctly. Love the vehicle. So, if it's right, worth the cost. God help me if they screwed up putting it all back together again. I'll post update as to how repair holds up.

I came sooo close to closing a purchase on a 2005 V6 4Runner last night but while doing so I recalled some info I had seen regarding the HG issue. The vehicle was absolutely immaculate and was maintained at the dealer religiously. The dealer assured me there was no such issue and he asked the mechanic about it who said that was only a problem on much older 4Runners. I didn't purchase and then today came across this thread which convinces me I made the right choice. No doubt this vehicle had the 'old' HG. Based on the information in this thread it seems that you have to be at a production date of Dec 2005 or later to get the new HG. I'm not sure what month they would start making the 2006 but it would be before Dec 2005. So even a 2006 model isn't necessarily safe. Gotta know that production date.
One question I have, is there a way to determine the production date from a VIN#. I did see a post here that mentioned going to a VIN decoder site but I can't seem to find one that provides manufacture date. Anyone know? Thanks.

You can see the production date on the sticker that’s on the door jam on the driver’s side. Also you can go on Toyota’s site and put your VIN in, and it will give you all that information as well.
