V6 Tick Tic Tap Noise Reduced!

Less movement=less rattle. After doing this test, I decided the mod would be beneficial and I was right!

chances are the v8 won't have the same problem (from what others have said) but it's a quick test and only a couple of bucks "wasted" if it ends up not doing anything.

I've though about doing this "mod", but always hesitated, now I can "test" to see if it would work for my truck. Also I'm glad to see you mentioned 1/4" o-rings as I have a crap load of those at work!

Just performend this mod. Only take a few minutes. I could hear the tick today since it's nice enough to have your window down today here in Cincinnati.
Used parts I had around the garage. I hope it work.

I was wondering why not just leave the bolt out and let it hang from hose clamps???

Why not just remove the bolt, wrap it in some foam and let it float? It doesnt have to be attached to the manifold from what I could see.

I started over with a new idea for the tick.

I took rubber dot sticky bumpers that you get for Bugshields for protecting the hood.
Put 1 on the solenoid notch and 1 on the body where it rest near manifold bolt. Same as Chris did with the tape.

Used nylon washer instead of the rubber o-rings on the bolt.

Then took foam tape like they use to put truck caps on and trimmed it to fit around the body of solenoid and put a wire tie around the foam tape.

Worked much better than My first attempt. I can barley hear it now but I know what the tick sounds like.
I still hear it if I pop the hood.
If you put your hand on the solenoid you can feel it clicking.

It does'nt sound like I have a exhaust leak now..

I think the biggest difference was the foam tape around the solenoid that muffled the sound of the clicking..

Well...I did the mod as shown in the first post. Cost me around $1 for a pack of o-rings, but it didn't help:cry2:

Yes, I'm bumping an old thread. But it's for a good reason!

I just got my 4R and the ONLY thing I don't like is the ticking noise. I thought I had a screw in my tire or an exhaust leak. Yesterday, I figured out where the ticking was coming from. I was trying to come up with a fix when, BAM, up pops this thread!

I hope this helps another new owner!

I know this is an old post, but I really want to thank CJ3flyer for this fix and point out where this is coming from, as we just purchased an 04 with this tick-taping and I was wondering wth??... After coming home from a trip in our new to us 4Runner, and hearing the tap for the first time. I did almost point to the exact place as the picture shows on the drivers side valve cover where the tap was coming from when I popped the hood.. But had no clue beyond oh crap, what did I just buy here.

To know that this is a common issue, and I now don't have to rebuild the engine in our 40K mile, paid to much due to the mileage Toyota is great! LOL

How often does that vacuum switch operate? I know there is a vapor purge pump system,that operates when your 4runner is parked, it is cleaning the charcoal in the vapor canister if i am correct.

FWIW, mine sounds identical. I've heard mixed reviews on the ticking mod. It's a function of the engine, which makes it ok with me. So no, don't be worried.

It's not a Rolls Royce's. It's a truck. :yo:

Tried this yesterday only to realize the VSV is not my problem. I guess I'm just experiencing the normal Yota tic.

I just find it unsettling that I hear it louder under moderate acceleration.

the noise you are hearing is the engine vent valve. it's located further back, near the firewall for the driver side. I've had that noise before and after replacing the valve, it never happened again. that part is around $6

Not much success with this mod.. Tried it today. Any changes are negligible. Maybe my lifters? Injectors?
