V8 4runner engine swap

When replacing the v8 engine on an 03 NON-VVTI 4.7 4runner, can you use a tundra or sequoia 4.7 as a direct swap? Do you need to use an 03-04, or can you direct swap an 05-09 VVTI? Looking to do a direct swap without needing to make any serious modifications to engine or electrical.

I don't see why not. Just make sure the replacement also doesn't have VVTI and you should be good. You may have to swap some of your 4runner accessories to the new motor is all but looking at the motors side by side should be pretty clear what will work and what won't. Guarantee motor mounts themselves won't be the same but where the mounts bolt to the engine will be the same.

Well the question was regarding a 05+ VVTi motor. Physically it may fit but from an electronics standpoint I can't imagine this being a direct drop in, at the very least I would imagine it requiring an ECU and harness swap but I don't know what other difference the VVTI carried. My recommendation would be to drop in a non vvti replacement like what you started with to keep things simple..

Turns out I can't read lol. You are correct!

There are some minor differences between the Tundra/Sequoia/Land Cruiser 2UZ-FE engines if I recall. But nothing that shouldn't be overcome by swapping parts off your old engine to the new one assuming they're in good condition (i.e. mounts, intake plenum, etc.) if I remember correctly. That is assuming you're donor engine is an '03-'04 unit.

I recall seeing a thread where someone did this and had a bugger of a time getting it to start and stay running. There was some obscure electronics that needed swapped, that was far from obvious.

Unfortunately I don't recall the specifics, but I'd suggest to find a certain answer one what needs doing prior to buying into a new motor. Or be prepared for some good 'ol prototyping!

Best luck, I really hope it works out and you're back on the trail.

08 engine replacement

Any idea if 2UZFE vvti sequoia, tundra can be moved into 08 v8 4runner? I just picked up a very clean limited with a bad engine.
Any input is appreciated
Thanks

They are all VVTi so should be fine. You will want to move as much as possible, minus the long block of course, from the old engine to the new engine. But otherwise, yes.

Edit - The later models are all VVTi, so try to stick with a motor of the same year or within a year, if possible.

Ok thanks. I’ve found a slew of engines on car-parts.com that are direct fit.
05-09 2UZFE runners and lexus gx470. Sniffing around on forums, guys are saying stay away from 05? No idea why. New to the 4th gen platform. Looking for some direction.

No idea why they are saying that. 05 would have been the first year of the VVTi engine but I have never heard of that being a bad thing.
