4.7L V8

does anyone know about swapping the 3.0L V6 engine for a 4.7L V8 from a tundra? i heard about a swap using a lexus V8 and i know the 3.4L V6 is a common swap. i just want a reliable and powerful V8 engine in my 95' with as little fabraction as possible. any help would be greatly appriciated.

Nope I have not seen it done.

The Lexus V8 IIRC needs some fab work. Even the Chevy 350 would require fab work.

I really think your best bet is the 3.4L if you want mor HP/TQ add the TRD supercharger this is the best route to go with the least amount of fab.

You want decent reliabilty then just stick with the 3.4 swap since it's been done;going with newer stuff on a 2nd gen could be asking for trouble since you would be one of the first.

Also do you think the 2nd gen's driveline could handle the horsepower shock???:awais:
 
thanks for the advice. i guess i'll do the 3.4L swap with a trd s/c. will i need to get a different trans? also, im going to need a shop to do all the work. does anyone know of any reputable shops and about how much it costs? i know the kit is around $2200.
 
Ask around and compare some install quotes from reputable mechanics who know what kind of job it will be with the custom work involved and I do think you need the tranny with the engine.
 
chevy v8's are 2 heavy for the truck. i talked to a guy that did it, and he said that the trucks front end was 2 heavy, and it got stuck everywhere, offroading and in snow.
 
did he beef up the front suspension to handle the extra 200 pounds? i know a few people who put 5.7L chevy V8's into there 4runners and there beasts.
 
I hear time and time again people saying that the exra weight from the V8 swap is too much for the stock suspension and I think that's a load of bull personally...

I drive my truck alone to work everyday, but on the weekend if I have a buddy ride with me it still drives fine... And my friends weigh 200+ pounds...

If you get a winch and a rollbar, you've added more then 200 pounds...

The xtra cab models use the same suspension as the standard cab models. Think there's 200 pounds of more metal in the xtra cabs?

All it takes to upgrade the front if you're worried about weight is new upgraded torsion bars and that's not too terribly expensive.

As for a 4.7 swap, that would be a pretty big job but I'm sure its doable if you have the money and skills. I know the 4.7 is a bad assed motor and everytime I drive our 4runner I wish I had that drivetrain in my truck.

No-way your friend has a screw loose....maybe to him if he went from a stock 22r 4 cyl. to a Chevy V-8 he thought it was to heavy he probably did not know how to off road and just ploweed into things and thought I got a big V-8 I shouldn't get stuck.

There is more to offroading then having 4wd and gobs of power.

They have been swaping Chevy V-8's into toyotas for 20 years.

If you are worried by the extra weight, you can swap your factory torsion bars with an heavy duty pairs (like the one from Old Man Emu)
 
I wish I remembered the 4 wheel mag I read but it had a write up with a 1st gen with the 4.7l v8 and full Total Chaos suspension. It was SICK!! I want it.
 
northwest offroaders might have something. i remember seeing something on their site for V8 conversions.

I would imagine the 4.7L being pricey. Might as well go for the 5.7L V8 :) Made a ton of power in my tundra
