v8 gas economy vs. v6

Why dont you go drive your 2wd 4runner around town or take it to the mall. IMHO a 2wd SUV is an oxymoron. Should have just gotten a ricer and put a fat 4" exhaust on it. Just about as useful as a 2wd 4runner

Well I did drive it to WalMart today.:

And as far as doing any really dumb Ghetto stuff,like stupid bling bling wheels and jacking around with my exhaust, I will let the little kids like you waste your money on that foolishness.:awais:

My brother has a V8 4Runner that he picked up two weeks ago. I have a V6 4Runner that is otherwise identical to his. I guess 4Runners run in the family!

The funny thing is that I've had the chance to drive his a couple of times recently and the V8 engine isn't any smoother than the V6 in my 4Runner. Yes, it is very smooth, but so is my V6. I'm not sure why so many V8 owners think that the V6 is not a smooth engine. It's about as smooth as possible by modern standards. It idles incredibly smoothly and it pulls through the rev range very smooth.

And for the guy who wondered why the V6 has a timing chain and the V8 has a belt, its because a belt is inherently quieter than a chain. Since the V8 engine is shared in the Lexus, it makes sense for them to make it as quiet as possible by using a belt. The chain is definitely better in terms of longevity and durability, but the belt is more quiet. Simple as that!

it IS smoother. you don't have to work it as hard as the v6. it outright puts down more power than the v6. torque baby. smooth arse torque.

OK...I have decided the V8 and the V6 are horrible engines...I want a V12!!! I will out tow you all...it will be smoother and even more fuel efficient than the V8...you'll see!

I'm sorry a Ford Bronco might have 4wd but it is far from an off road vehicle.

This is a 4wd truck.

Nevermind that the 2WD version has a higher TOWING capacity. I bought my 4Runner for TOWING...

You seem to miss the fact that my 4Runner DOES get used quite frequently for its full capability. In fact, I wish it had more power than it does at times, which is why I now have a 5.7L Tundra as the towing beast. Because I needed/wanted more power and stability.

For the OP, these are the figures published by Toyota before new EPA standards. The V6 with 4speed auto and non VVT-i V8 are for 2003-04, 2005+ are the V6 with 5speed auto and VVT-i V8. As always your mileage will vary, but given consistent driving habits expect a difference of 1-2mpg between the two.

V6 w/ 4speed auto: 2WD 18/21, 4WD 17/21
V6 w/ 5speed auto: 2WD 18/22, 4WD 17/21

V8 non VVT-i: 2WD 16/20, 4WD 15/19
V8 w/ VVT-i: 2WD 17/20, 4WD 16/19
