V8... Just because?

Alright guys, all of my reservations and concerns about the v8 have been addressed, as well completely annihilated I see the car tonight and then hopefully to the bank on thrusday to get the cashiers check.

This car is not going to get premium put into (mainly cause I cant stand giving OPEC any extra money) Also, I already have my eye on a gibson exhaust system once I get my hands on the vehicle.

In a perfect world I would be able to get a 4WD but right now I am only allotting myself one glutinous item at a time and the v8 won this round.

Man i'm pretty excited.

1 more Q. Does the v8 cause the 4r to sit any lower than the v6? I am thinking of stuffing some 265/70/17 on it and have read how rubbing can be an issue for some.

Nope. The V8 is about 200 pounds heavier, but I don't think you could tell much of a difference in ride height. Be aware that a tire size 265/70/17 could rub at full-locked turns and will throw off the speedo/odometer by roughly 2.5%

I like my V8 for the full time 4WD and speed. If you shift into 4 and then punch the gas, you better hold on. The truck you are interested looks nice and well cared for. The only problem I can see is the mileage. It seems like a lot of miles for an 06.

I live in los angeles and if you thought I was concerned about never towing anything, I am 10 times more likely to tow something than I am to go offroading.

"right" is a very subjective term.

Says who??? There is nothing in the manual nor from Toyota that says the V6 requires premium fuel. For both engines, premium is recommended... I always hate these V6 versus V8 debates because of misinformation that gets spread.

V8 has more torque, more HP without question.
V6 has better fuel economy, without question.

If you like the V8, get the V8, don't listen to anybody else tell you what to get because that is their decision.

My info was based on the 03 models. Back then the V8 had a very low redline, lower compression ratio, and no VVT-i and it did not offer more horsepower than the faster spinning, VVT-i equipped V6. The numbers were 235 for the V8, 245 for the V6.

The V8 did not recommend premium, but the V6 did.

The V8 has slightly longer front springs so it sits at the same height. However, the 2WD models have shorter front springs than the 4WD. I know that size will fit fine on the 4WD, not sure about the 2WD.

I always worry about excessive towing. Also, go through the service records to make sure that truck was well cared for.

Ok just came back from seeing the truck. I have a couple issues with it;

1) The truck had been sitting un-started in the driveway for about a month b/c the person who owned had moved away and the person selling it had neglected to move it. (however all service records accounted for)

2) The back up camera is mounted INSIDE on the ceiling of the truck (WTF?)

3) A 1" square burned spot on the drivers side carpet (not floormat). Front 2 floormats are pretty dirty and gonna need replacement

4) It has those hairline circle scratches from somebody using a coarse towel when washing it. You think a good waxing will take that out?

The nav is a pioneer AVIC w/ ipod connector and the subs are "directed"? It has an exhaust, k&n filter, new good years (265/65/17).

I got him down to $15.5K, so even though it has some things i would like to see different, I feel its a good deal.

P.S. That v8 is freaking sweet. I cant believe I was considering NOT getting. What a dummy.

One issue about the V8 that I'm not sure has come up in this thread is the sulfer stink. Somehow I missed it when test driving mine. There is a stcky somewhere about it. Mine has it and it's nasty. I will do something about it this summer. Thought you should know.

Actually, the 4.0L V6 in the 4th generation 4Runner never required premium fuel. I had an '03 V6 and my owner's manual said that 87 octane was required, but premium was recommended. There have been no changes to the 4.0L V6 from when it was first put in the 4Runner in 2003 right up until the new '09 models.

The sulfer smell is an issue with both V8 and V6 engines. If I'm not mistaken, both engines use the same exact exhaust system and components.

Not sure where you got your numbers, but mine are much different. I owned a V6 4Runner in 2003 for a year before it was totaled in a freak accident. I replaced it with a V8 4Runner the next year. And the ironic thing is that I recent went back to a V6 4Runner again.

I used to drive about 18,000 miles per year (mostly highway driving) and my V6 4Runner averaged 4.5 mpg higher than my V8 4Runner. I consider myself an average driver (not aggressive nor passive) about 99% of the time. I always see people commenting that the V8 fuel mileage penalty is insignificant (around 1 mpg less than the V6), but my own data suggests that the it is more like 4 or 5 mpg worse. If I do the math, the V8 will cost me considerably more $$$ per year than the V6, even at current gas prices of $2/gal. If gas goes back up to $4/gal, the difference will obviously be twice as much!

Now if the V8 engine was worth it for me, then I wouldn't mind paying more at the pump. But for my needs, the V6 has more than enough power. But for those people who are still on the fence--don't kid yourself...the V6 engine is definitely more economical and will do absolutely fine for 99% of drivers.

I love the V6 and the V8 , I would not hesitate to own either one. I have the V8 and I like everything about it .

The biggest thing for ME would be I would never buy a 2wd unless I bought another car. Even then I would atleast look at AWD like a Subaru.

It also looks like he did some work on the car, make sure to run a carfax on it to check for accidents and see where the car was sold first. And check all around for replaced parts. Go under and check for rust, etc... Drive the car, check the ride, vibrations, pull during braking, etc. Ask if he has all the records. Ask him what kind of oil he uses, what intervals he gets the car service. You can easily spot an owner who cares about his ride..... Good Luck....

Just for the record and clarity: Assuming a 5mpg difference and $2/gallon gas, the cost difference per 1000 miles is $33 between a V8 and a V6.

Calculation: (1000mi/(20mi/gal)*$2/gal) - 1000mi/(15mi/gal)*$2/gal) = $33.

So that would be about $.03/mile at $2 gas and 5mpg delta.

Someone check my math--I could always be wrong somewhere.

It's a linear equation, so if the difference is 2.5mpg, then you're looking at $16.5/1000 miles. If gas doubles in price, then it'd be $66/1000 miles.

I actively looked for 4Rs with 2wd i dont need or want 4wd... simple as that.

I bought it last night. It needs a good cleaning but man it is sweet. I bought new floormats today for $100 and an air freshener. Got an oil change as well.It has a couple a couple a scratches that need some attention. The sound system is really nice but I may be selling the subs.

So far I have received 2 compliments about the way the engine sounds with the exhaust. :awais:
