V8 response

My V8 responses great. But when you do not punch/leadfoot/floorit in a while the computer learns this so it is not that responsive. But I bet if you floorit a few times from a stop light, your 4runner will become more responsive. I am not an expert, but I know this from trying it a few times.

Yeah, with all wheel drive that thing just leaps off the line. Once she gets the supercharger - I'm gonna have to upgrade to the new M5!

Really though, it's not much of a competition ;-) ... I just love letting her think she can keep up with me - and the blow her doors!

I don't have this problem at all, but I have a 4X2. . .you should get it checked out, see if your air filter is clogged up or something. . .I have nearly 10K on the clock, and my mileage has gotten better, acceleration feels faster, AND I've had a brush guard installed on the front!!!

I dont know if mine is really problematic....it was stated early in this post that they were sayin their 4Runner was sluggish, mine isnt that...i just feel sometimes off the line it isnt as responsive as others....for the most part I feel like i just get used to it and dont notice it as much...who knows...i hope there isnt anything wrong with my truck


Also...a side note...a friend has a jeep with their 4.7L V8 in the '03 model and that is 265 HP with 325 ft-lb torque...i wonder why Toyota cant get 265 with the same sized engine

Just grab a Jeep GC brochure and find the HP/TORQUE CURVE. Then compare that to the Toyota's 4.7L V8 engine's curve.

The Jeep's 4.7L HO engine is very PEAKY. It's torque curve is NOT flat...it's kinda like a car engine (not as much torque at low RPMs).

The Toyota's engine has a very flat torque curvce, resulting in excellent torque everywhere on the RPM chart.

For a truck, a flat torque curve is everything. :thumb:
 
We considered the Jeep 4.7L V8 (high output version) which has 265 hp. Thing is - what I'm looking for is the actual performance of the vehicle, not just the engine. 0-60 mph of Grand Cherokee with the 265hp engine is only 8.5. The 4 Runner is nearly a second faster to 60.

Similar to the BMW 330 - only 225hp in the standard edition, but can match acceleration figures of the G35 which produces as much as 280 hp, and actually out performs the G35 with the 'performance' package of 235hp.

It's all about how you engineer the vehicle to me, not just how much hp and torque you've got. HOW DOES IT PERFORM?

Have any of you actually floored it from 0-60 to test the time? For some reason i am always hesitant about putting the pedal all the way to the metal...
 
i have, I rougly clocked a little under 8 seconds, when the engine was still a little fresh, I bet it's faster NOW!!!

actually, that was before the brush guard, so I'm sure I'm actually slower. . .200lbs will slow you down.
 
oh yeah, jus a quick thought, there is more driveline loss in a 4X4 so in essence, the engine will seem "bogged" down when compared to a 4X2 4runner. . . the torsen center diff does cause some driveline loss as well. . .

Perhaps - but slight. Mine's 4x4, and I'm extremely impressed with the off the line performance. No tire slippage - just instant acceleration.

My M3 if I don't perfectly launch it will sit there smoking the tires...
 
performance

I am more then happy with my v8.. I think it has plenty of power, but I tend to drive alot slower now then I did with my 1999 Acura 3.2tl.. I keep the computer set onto the MPG mode, it kinda keeps me in check..

I have 2200 miles now my computer is showing 15mpg average.. What do you guys show, I do alot of non-highway driving.. Thanks
 
I don't know about you guys...but my V8 screams into the driving lane just fine....There's definitely no replacement for displacement. After owning 4cyl and 6cyl cars this baby huals ASS!!!!

I luv it...and I'm going to slap an S/C on it as soon as financially possible. I wanted to do it to my '98 but just wasn't sure....from what history tells me with TRD...I think it will work and last just fine....when dealer installed and warrantied of course!!! :D

I drive my truck with the medal to the floor daily, quick and responsive, I've given several cars a surprise wake up:)

The only time my truck feels sluggish per say is when it's cold and holds 1st gear longer but you can hear the engine roaring more but it seems a lot of cars have the same habit.

My 04 4*4 V8 way out-performs my Tundra and my Sequoia in every possible situation. The 5 sp tranny is much smoother with the 4.7. My 02 Sequoia was worse than my 2000 Tundra and the 04 Runner beats em both handidly in terms of smooth power.

Sounds like you could be havin an issue with the tranction control. Test drive another one and make the A/B comparison.
 
maybe you need to disconnect the battery and reset the computer. Maybe you didn't push the truck hard during the break in period, and the computer thinks that you are a grandpa and adjust the truck accordingly. ;)
 
Performance Chip

Hi,

I am new here, I own a 03 White V8 4X4 SE. I just changed the air filter and muffler and it moves out great. Just to let you guys know I was talking to the service center here in california and they are working on a performance chip. The manager told me it's a piggie back chip and will fine tune the performance. Estimated timeframe about six months. I was checking on a possible supercharger too. I'm from the old school, the need for speed even in a SUV.
