V8 timing belt @ 98K

Next oil change I'm most likely going to have the timing belt replaced. Yes I know I am 8K late on the recommended interval.

Should I replace the water pump at the same time? How about any idlers/tensioners on the timing belt?

I'm thinking drain and fill on the tranny as well. Good idea or not?

I'm the original owner and want the truck to last a few more years.

Do it all while its down , otherwise be right back for pump or other stuff . If you have the funds of course .

I agree. If you can afford to, replace EVERYTHING that is under that timing cover while you're in there so hopefully with luck you won't have to touch it again until 200K.

I'm in same boat. I'm the original owner and 800 miles short of 100,000. Water pump is on the list. Timing chain I've heard is overkill and not necessary. Someone posted an invoice of what the Toyota dealer recommended, along with price quotes. Haven't been able to find that post.

His is a V8 so yes he should do it & yes our V6 is a chain should last cpl hundo .

I just did mine timing belt at 115k miles. Did it myself. Fairly straightforward job if you have simple tools, impact and step-by-step instructions. If not, just take it to mechanic.
I replaced water pump. Old one was leaking. They almost all leak in same place. For years my coolant level was always on low side but I could not see where it was going. There is a little hole in old gasket and it was evaporating I guess. I would definitely replace water pump and gasket. Also replace idlers (x2), one on tensioner and other by itself. I also replaced TB hydraulic tensioner. Check your serpentine belt idlers as well. Bearing on one of them was shot. And replace serpentine belt while you there. I also replaced crank shaft seal. It was not leaking but it was just too easy to ignore while you have it all disassembled. By the way Timing Belt itself was in below average condition. It had visible multiple cracks on outside. It could probably last another year but it would fail eventually. I'm glad I finally stepped up to the plate and did it. Only cost me $320 for premium ebay timing belt kit + 1 gal of Toyota Long life.

Just got a quote from an independent shop I've used for 20 years. $750 with non-OEM Japanese parts. $850 w/ OEM parts. Timing belt, idler, tensioner, water pump, new serp belt, new Toyo coolant, and seals as needed. Will inspect hoses, replace on condition.

Don't have a dealership quote for reference.

That sounds good. My dealer did everything with OEM parts for $800.

It's a real PITA to do it yourself, but it's manageable. Definitely replace the water pump and serpentine belt while you're at it. The tensioner "grenade" probably won't need replacing but if it makes you feel better while you're at it, have at it.

Its a big job for a weekend mechanic to do with limited tools, but it can be done if you have some experience turning a wrench.
