V8 Timing Belt and Water Pump Cost

Went to a shop here in Colorado Springs the other day and they recommended that I have my timing belt and water pump replaced again. They do pretty solid work so I know that I would be covered there but they also said the bill for TB, WP, and coolant change would be $1490 :yell:

I called Toyota here in the Springs and they quoted me at $1350 out the door. (also insane). Is this due to the recent inflation or am I getting just plain ripped?? All of the threads on this are from at least 5/6 years ago so I'm sure prices have changed some.

This is for my 03 V8 with 260k miles on it and I intend to run this truck for a long time.

I had mine done at the stealership 4 years ago and it was a little over $1400.

I had an independent mechanic change the water pump & timing belt on my '04 v8 4runner about 3 years ago. Cost me around $600.
Don't go to a stealership, ask an independent mechanic to do it.

I have a buddy who runs his own shop up here in Denver, and he quoted me just under $1200 for the job. I trust him as a mechanic and with the quote not being over-blown.

Just over 1k in Florida for my Son's 06' Tundra. Long back order wait on the Aisin kit though. Went w a Nitoma kit that my mechanic said looked good and came w an Aisin water pump.

Here in TX the dealership charges 1500 and they only replace the water pump and timing belt inclusively. (had to confirm they would not touch the thermostat; only at extra cost)

I went with a local Land Cruiser shop that charged 2k but also changed thermostat, fuel filter, and idler pulley.

On the expensive side no doubt but, I've got back problems and being hunched over my engine bay like that is torture.

Went to a Yota dealership Saturday to see how much they'd quote for the timing belt/water pump. $3300 for full overhaul which included "timing belt kit with water pump, crank, cam seals, tensioner, idler, valve cover gasket kit, etc." or $975 for "timing belt only with tensioner and idler."

I just had a call with my dealer service advisor this morning...he said $2800-$3500 depending on what is replaced....

My 2003 4Runner SE V8 4x4 has 119000 miles and I had the timing belt changed at 65500 miles. No replacement of the water pump, tensioner, etc. at the time.

Presently, no issues with the 4Runner/Engine. No leaking, extra sounds, etc. All good! Live in Southern CA and only drive about 5000 miles a year. Some around town and a few longer driving trips per year. I have only towed a light trailer one time.

Thus, 55000 miles on the newer belt, but about 10-years of life on it.

Expensive peace-of-mind and, trying to decide which way to go...

I replied to your other post, please read it....to add here I would find an good independent shop to do the work, preferably one that has experience with these Toyota V8s, you will get it done for 1/2 or less than the lower price you mentioned from the Toyota dealer, there should be a few good shops near you in that area of California.

975 for the timing belt?? That is the lowest I have seen for just a timing belt replacement, even at a Toyota dealer. I might have to go there lol

I just had my timing belt, water pump, serpentine belt and AC Compressor replaced by an independent shop (Toyota Master Tech) a month ago. I provided the timing belt and compressor. I originally planned on taking it to the dealership as they had the lowest rate, but when it came time to booking, they were going to add an AC diagnostic fee that they didn't disclose to me a couple months ago when I was calling around getting quotes.

Cost in CAD$:
Timing Belt Kit (Aisin, RockAuto) - $250.79
AC Compressor (Denso, RockAuto) - $331.19

Bill from the mechanic - $1241.60

The car had to stay overnight as he was having troubles with some rusty & damaged bolts (from previous owner), but would have been done in a day otherwise. The serpentine belt wasn't on the docket, but they noticed a visible crack when taking it off.
