V8 Timing Belt

Should I replace just the belt or everything!?

On previous cars/trucks I always went with TB, WP, tensioner, accessory... etc.

Is it necessary?

I have yet to do this but from all that I've read/been told, just do everything while everything is open.

It took me something like 20 hours to do the timing belt replacement. If you value your time and the reliability of your 4runner more than you value a few hundred dollars extra, you might as well replace everything while you're at it. If the water pump fails the timing belt has to come off to get to it (plus leaking coolant can damage the belt).

Most people say for the cam and crank seals you might as well wait until the second timing belt change since they typically last that long and it's a lot of extra work.

AISIN TKT021 has almost everything you need for $160. I also replaced the thermostat, serpentine belt, coolant, transmission fluid (because I replaced the radiator), and radiator (because I broke it). I can't remember if there's anything else worth replacing, but there are some very comprehensive threads about changing the timing belt.

I agree, you should replace everything while you are there...I did. Don't forget the t-stat, you will need some liquid gasket to seal that too. 20 hours might be on the higher end for time on this job, I think the shop flag time is 8. I did mine in around that but have done other cars before. You should take your time though... if you mess up the engine will most likely blow up... no big deal.

I did the job with help from a couple members on here. Took us about 14h, first time any of us had done it. We swapped everything out and those 14h included lunch and an autozone stop.

I replaced my spark plugs as well as what's been mentioned.

I also replaced the AC condenser after I put a hole in it.

It can certainly be done faster, especially if you have a shop or have done it before. Now that I think of it, I might have made a run to Home Depot and the auto parts store on my bike to get additional tools, and if I did that on the day I did the belt change then I'm overestimating the amount of time it took. I wasted a good bit of time with stuck bolts and making sure I was doing everything right. I made a crank pulley holding tool which didn't work. I think taking it apart was 12+ hours, and putting everything back was only a few hours. Then the next day I spent a few more hours for the radiator and transmission fluid which are not required to do the timing belt.

At minimum, replace the drive belts, timing belts, and water pump.

Not that I see many Toyota thermostats going bad, but it wouldn't hurt to toss in a thermostat and a radiator cap in as well as it's been X Years and probably close to 100k.

Cam and Crank seals don't normally leak on the 2UZ-FE's with the exception of Post '05 VVTi engines, those seem to develop leaks at the camshaft seals by about 100k on most engines (to varying degrees). Those can be a pain to change out but not impossible as long as you follow the repair manual.

I don't normally see tensioners go bad on sub-200k engines, but it is possible I suppose. The key with those is to compress them slowly as they are a sorta hydraulic/spring loaded unit. The idler pulleys for the timing belt don't usually go bad under 200k either, but it doesn't hurt to check them.

You can reference this thread for part numbers if you need them:

Post Note- I need to fix the pictures, didn't realize they were on photobucket... that'll be a weekend project lol

Thank you very much!

In addition to my timing belt, I need brakes on all four corners, I have been having this increasing level of road noise.

Would you comment on what you think might be going on?
