UPDATE! Valentines Day Tires! Help me Pick!

DH said I could get roses or tires for Valentines... After much concideration, I have chosen tires.

Sooo... I need some advice. I have looked at several and got prices and I think it is narrowed down to either the Cooper Discoverer ATP or the Nitto Terra Grapplers. Probably going to stick with stock size since I really don't have plans to add a lift any time soon.

What I am trying to acheive with new tires over my stock Duelers is longer life (we were told upon purchase that the Duelers would only last 20,000 miles), something better in the snow and something that would add a little more aggressive look to my sissy 4R.

I have seached this forum for days for reviews and pictures of these two tires. I found that there are very few Coopers out there (Okki has them, but I really didn't see any others) and there are more Nitto people. Sounds like they are both good tires. But they are so similar I just want some honest opinions of them if anyone has them. Both are the same price. The milage warranty on the Coopers is 55,000 and the Nittos is 50,000, so that is similar too.

What do you think?

BTW, I love the look of the Duratracs but with no mileage warranty, those didn't make the list. I love the BFG's but they are quite a bit more $. Any other suggestions I haven't thought of?

I bet I was only searching for the ATP's which, I believe, is a Discount Tire exclusive. I didn't realize that the AT/3 were essentially the same tire. Thanks for the help in providing links.

This is one of those situations where being a chick is going to save you. If you were a dude, you'd be getting flamed for asking (one of) the most over-discussed topics on this forum. But that's only because there are probably no less than 1,256 tire threads on this forum.

That said, most people that choose Coopers go with the AT3 over the ATP. A lot of people like them, but my tire guy advised against Coopers. I'm sure its just his personal preference, but I trust him so I ended up going with his recommendation of the Toyo Open Country ATII's. More info on those HERE

I think you'll get the best bang for your buck with either the
Hankook Dynapro ATM
Nitto Terra Grappler

Both offer good performance and long life at a reasonable price.

I can't find the post, but I have read a bad review or 2 of the Dynapro's. After 20k miles, noise goes up quite a bit and traction becomes an issue.

Why did your tire guy advise you against cooper? Considering they get good reviews all around and are on consumer report's top picks. It's hard to believe.

Like I said, it's probably just his personal preference. Everyone has their preferred brands and those they don't like. He could have had one bad experience and that is what sticks out in his mind even though thousands of people use them successfully everyday.

In my opinion, most tires (within the same class)are very comparable. Some may be better than others, but I think a lot of that depends on personal preference. I think the AT3's and OCII's are very similar but I liked the look of the OCII's better.

I have the Hankooks on my work truck (2011 F-150) They have 35,000 miles on them and still look brand new. I have been on some very sloppy job sites and they have done great for me. They're also inexpensive and very quiet on the road. The only reason I didn't get a set for the Runner was because I wanted something a little more aggressive looking.

What about Bridgestone Revo II? Great AT tire and should last you a good amount. Not to aggressive but does well in snow and light dirt.

And this is exactly what I knew I would get and exactly why I wasn't going to post a question. It seems like almost everything is over-discussed and this comment can go with any subject, especially those that are about just starting out on mods for your 4R, which is when you have the most questions.

That being said, thank you to those who have commented on the tires I was asking about for my situation and for the suggestions. Every thread I have read on tires (and it is alot of the 1,200 threads Dusty mentioned) has so much contradicting information that it's very frustrating. I realize it's all personal opinions, but it's difficult sifting through it all and choosing a good tire to meet your needs.

How long did it take for you to decide between the two? It would have taken my woman a second (or less). She loves to go camping and I spend a lot of time on bad forest service,other roads besides off road.
I have the stock AT3's and am very pleased with them. Cooper is one of those underrated brands.

Oh no time to decide! The choice is obvious... IMO. I'm the one always trying to talk him into doing any mods- even tires (if those even count as a mod).

I do like the Cooper's. Thanks for your input. They may fit my needs nicely!

Does well everywhere as far as I'm concerned....just doesn't look quite as "bad" as some others...

I took my last set off with 45K and I bet they would've easily made 60K-65K

I put Nitto tera grapplers stock size on my 4runner 2k miles ago. So far I love them, feels much better then stock rubber. Much better in snow also and they look great too!

Update!

I got the stock size Cooper Discoverer ATP's installed Saturday. I think they look great and feel great! I am surprised by the difference it made in the ride, for the better! We haven't had snow since Saturday so I can't say how they are in the snow just yet, but I'm sure it won't be long before I have the opportunity. Discount Tire gave me $300 for my Duelers. They tried to give me $60 for all 4 until I told them I was walking since Big-O quoted a trade-in of $300. Anyway, just thought I would update. Thanks for the help!
