Value of 4Runner as 6th Gen arrive

The first generation 10 speeds always gear hunt all the time, I'm not sure more speeds is the way to go.

Likely a 6th gen would also get electric power steering and that's something I cant live with.

If they toss in a new engine it's going to be smaller and that's less torque and again that's not good. Unless they do a modern turbo with torque near idle

I feel the value of the 4th gen V8 went up or at least held firm after they removed the that engine option from the 5th gen.

You never know what's going to happen. Even the FJ prices seemed to go up after they discontinued it.

If they do something stupid in the 6th generation of the truck, the 5th will feel the benefit. Personally I hope Toyota figures it out, does something cool or groundbreaking but we all know how that story goes.

I already own a 4th and 5th gen, I probably won’t buy another with the direction things have been heading. I tend to gravitate to the older trucks to be honest, I still like my 4th more than my 5th.

I'm on my 2nd 3rd gen and will eventually get a 5th gen...keeping my 3rd gen regardless.

I feel like it's possible Toyota might NERF the 6th Generation 4runner. In my opinion that's the trend after seeing what they did with the Tacoma. The power/throttle curve on the new engine is the reason I will be keeping my 2010 Tacoma until it turns to dust.

I purchased a 2019 4runner last month to add to my collection just incase the 6th generation 4runner is a dud. I've seen several supposed images of the next generation and let's just say it solidified my decision to buy the 2019. That and the 4.0 is a workhorse.

If the 6th generation proves to be better I can buy one after giving it a couple years to work the bugs out.

It’s a much better built truck as well as being stronger and far quieter than my 5th gen. If there is a zombie apocalypse and I could only choose one, the 4th gen it is even though it’s an 07 vs a 16. No contest.

Couldn’t agree more… I feel I can say this without being bias because I own both, but I think the 4th gen was pretty much the best generation of 4runner made to date. It feels peppier, more agile, and with a better turning radius than my 5th. This is of course ignoring interior trim, the Limited 5th has a nicer interior, but something just feels different when driving it… I feel a bit more “disconnected” from the truck.

That said, I do have my eyes on a cherry 3rd gen, Limited 4WD, garage kept in SoCal. My neighbor owns it and I always mention I need to add it to my collection. Don’t think he’s selling it any time soon, they love the truck, but I’d love to own one just to build it up as a crawler. My 4th gen is built for desert enjoyment. 5th is our city truck until I destroy my 4th gen off-road.

I just picked up A 2017 TRD Off Road Premium. I wasn't sure what Toyota was going to do regarding the 6th gen. Especially with a possibility of the 3.5L getting dropped in. I really like the 4L and that's what I wanted.

I agree with this. More speeds is not necessarily a good thing unless done right. My wife has a 9-speed in her Pilot and for descending mountain roads it is awful. Never seems to be in the right gear and poor at engine braking. It just has too many gears. Though I will concede it is nice and smooth the rest of the time for climbing and casual driving.

Still, my 5-speed Acura is always in the right gear no matter the conditions and it is quite the canyon carver.... This was one of my decisions in buying a '19 Limited. 5 speeds. Yes, it's not terribly quick but I've never felt like 5-speed was too little.

I drove the 8-speed Rav4 before deciding on the Limited. That may have worked (I didn't get the chance to test it in mountains) but I still felt like a 6 or 7 speed would have been just fine for a 4Runner. No need for anything else.

Chicken tax doesn’t apply to the 4Runner.
Making it in the US is a horrible idea.

Having such a hard time pulling the trigger on a ‘19TRDOR. Just does not compare to our ‘05 V8 SE. The 4.0 is just a dog compared tho the V8. However the increase in space from 4th to 5th is incredible. I think.

Exactly. Who cares what changes are made. I have a 2015 SR5 Premium only because my 2002 was totalled in an accident in 2015. Really miss my 2002!

I don't understand why so many fap to the 4th Gen. The V8 made the same power as the 4.0 in the 5th Gen, it had horrible sales numbers (that's partially due to the fuel costs and economy at the time) and it is by far the ugliest generation of 4Runner lacking in character and soul in its design.

IMHO the 4.0 only needs one extra gear and it would be great, give it the 6-speed in the 150 and leave it alone. Like most I hope that they don't slowly turn the 4Runner into a cross-over of sorts with a unibody, but I can't see them doing that with the Highlander in place, that said, it didn't stop Nissan from killing off the Xterra and neutering the Pathfinder.

Making the 4Runner in Texas would be a huge mistake and I live in Texas and I am all for the jobs it would bring, but keep it in Japan and keep the quality control.

I am open to getting a new 4Runner in time if they do right by it, but I will dip out on ever buying one if they throw the 3.5L from the Tacoma in it.
