Valve adjustment, 22re with RV cam

So I got the valves adjusted yesterday on my new 22re with 497 miles. If you guys remember, it had a real clacky valve train. The adjustment didn't really help too much. Just wondering what kind of spec they should be set to for an RV cam? Instructions from the builder said to do them .008 and .010 cold. My mechanic took a lot of issue with those specs and kept saying they need to be set hot. Regardless he set them as the builder requested and said the engine runs good but he thinks its a lot louder than it should be. I guess now I'm wondering what others with RV cams set theirs at? And are they still loud?

On another topic, do any of you guys run diesel oils in your 22re? I'm debating switching to Rotella T 10w-30 because of the higher zinc. I've read that it can foul your cat, but I wasn't sure if its a real concern on an older truck since they were made in the days of higher zinc oils anyways.

You should adjust your valve lash when the engine is warmed up. So your adjustments on a cold engine are probably a little loose causing some excessive noise.

Thats what i thought and what my mechanic knew. My warranty paperwork and the tag attached to the engine when I got it specifically said to do it cold. It's frustrating because I know the builder knows their stuff, but my mechanic does too. I hate when I get differing opinions...

They probably said to do it cold so you don't start it at first without adjusting the valves at all and thinking you have to warm it up before you adjust them.

When you first build an engine, you adjsut the vavles when the engine is cold so you can get it in the ball park without causing any damage. Then after it's warm you adjust it again.

Stock valve clearance is .008 intake and .012 exhaust after you warm it up. I usually do mine at .007 and .011 cold. No excess noises or rattles.

He does not have a stock cam. If you have a modified cam, you adjust the valves to the cam specs.

Yup, its supposed to be .008 and .010 COLD according to the builder. Valves were already adjusted prior to leaving there place, I just had to do it again at 500 mile service. It really does run great, nice mpgs too, just noisy.
